WassupBlog Now Hosted On A VPS Host

You certainly don’t have to be Tom Cruise to have a need for speed! Nope, you just have to be a blogger who wants to supply his readers with the ultimate experience. Sure, we all know that content is king but, people may not hang around long enough to see how good your content really is if your blog takes too long to load.  That’s bad and what’s worse is that if you’re blog is all about making money then having a slow blog may be costing you sales.

I’ve done a couple of posts on how to increase your blog speed, the last one being Taking The Time To Increase Your Blog’s Speed., but this one is going to show you ways that won’t just make your blog faster it will also make Google happier, and we all want to do that don’t we?  :tongue_laugh_ee:

I’ve put up with this blog loading too slowly for way too long and because I didn’t want to get rid of any of my plugins to increase it’s speed, there was only one thing for me to do. It was to say to goodbye to BlueHost and move this blog away from shared hosting to {InMotion hosting}. I probably would have made the move a lot sooner if it wasn’t for BlueHost’s CPU throttling but in the end I outgrew even that.

I made the move on Friday and whilst the improvement in speed was remarkable I was a little miffed when Google’s Page Speed Insight only gave me a score of 64/100.  :noway: Nope, I wasn’t going to stand for that and so I did some tweaking and I got the score up to 89/100. However, before taking their result as gospel I decided to give WebPageTest a go to see what sort of results they would give.

page performance testYep, too many reds in there for my liking but after all the tweaking I was able to get the following result.

site speed performanceYou have to agree that looks a lot better doesn’t it, and I’m betting that you want to know what I did to get that improvement too? Well, I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait until my next post. Heck, you may even want to subscribe to my list so that you won’t miss out on it  :smoke_tb: Oh, I’ll also plan to do a post on my experience with moving the blog to a new host :wink_ee:

  1. Congrats on moving to VPS. I also want to do this for my most popular website but t the moment I think I’m fine.
Also, let us know on the tips you did for improving speed. I wonder how much your pages will rise in SERPs because of this move.

  2. This is a significant change, but I have several questions. Was this a personal choice or the shared plan wasn’t able to keep up with the high number of visitors. In addition, do the VPS is worth the extra-investment?

    1. Unfortunately, as good as BlueHost are I outgrew the shared hosting environment. I’ve been considering this move for quite some time now and am really happy that I finally bit the bullet and made the move.

As to it being worth the extra investment, I wouldn’t have moved the site if I didn’t believe it to be true.

    1. VPS or Virtual Private Server is where you get a partition of your very own on a virtual server. This means that you no longer have to worry about the other sites on your shared host or the effect they may have on yours.

I’ll be doing a post going into more detail at a later date.

  3. I must admit that I don’t keep up with my blog like I should, mostly because of speed, but partly because I am lazy. Will be following closely to see what you did and make sure I don’t miss anything so that I can get my speed up and hopefully push my blog further than I have! Thanks for the info!

Has VPS helped you increasing the site speed? though your website looks good to me and loaded pretty fast here. But that could be due to my high Internet speed. Do keep us posted.

      1. I did notice the very significant difference. I thought you had tweaked your theme, because I notice the flexibility theme and other themes created by the same creators seems to have this slow loading in common. Turns out you’ve upgraded. Cool!

        1. I did end up tweaking some things after the move to move things along a little quicker James. You can read about it in the commentluv link

Hello I would highly recommend using Media Temple if you don’t mind shelling out the extra cash for something reliable (albeit I would not call Media Temple the best-in-class/ best for what you’re paying)…

Also I’d highly recommend using CloudFlare as a CDN! You probably don’t even need a VPS if you have properly set up a content delivery network – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! many people get VPSes for ultra fast serving but do not get a CDN – this is big mistake.

    1. Unfortunately they were more than I was willing to pay, plus they didn’t appear to have CPanel which was a prerequisite for my search.

As to CloudFlare, that was the first thing I did but it wasn’t good enough for what I needed. Having said that I still have an account with them.
