How Much Do You Really Want To Cheese Off Your Readers

The one thing that I really love about blogging is that unlike visiting a static website it allows you to interact with your readers, and as a commentator it allows you to interact with the blogger and his visitors. One of the reasons I am so passionate about this is because in the real world, unless around family and friends, I tend to keep to myself.

As a blogger I write basically so that I can express myself but also to entertain and sometimes to instruct anyone who happens to land on one of my posts. But all that comes to nothing unless those posts elicit a response such as comment. I thrive on my comments, almost as much as being able to comment on those blogs that I visit. Yet even though I love to comment there are certain things that bloggers do that irk me so much I just leave in disgust.

Ten Reasons Why I Don’t Comment On Your Blog

Closed Comments: I just finished reading a blog, one that I enjoyed reading so much I couldn’t wait to finish so that I could leave a comment. Imagine my disappointment when I found out they had disabled comments on their blog! Who would do that? I know there are some who say I could still have tweeted it but I could have but I didn’t because I didn’t want someone to go through the same thing I did.
Comment Moderation: I really dislike it when my comment go into moderation, especially when the blogger doesn’t have a plugin installed that notifies me that someone has replied. This means I never know if my comment was accepted and I certainly don’t have the time to continually pop in to see if it ever goes live. What with all the plugins available to combat spam I don’t believe comment moderations is necessary.
Third Party Comment Systems: I’ve touched on this several times, the last one being the time I wrote about What Was The Best WordPress Commenting System, and every post showed not only that the default system is the best system but that using a third party system will cost you comments. More than that I know of some bloggers who will scroll to the bottom of the post before reading just to make sure they’re not using disqus or some other third party system. Something that I plan to do in future.
PoUps: I hate it when I’m reading a post and this annoying thing pops up trying to get my attention. I never know what they are because I either close it immediately or I’ve moved off the blog.
Being Ignored: The blogger has done all the right things, they’ve written a good post, use the default comment system and have installed a subscribe to comment plugin but they stop there and ignore their commentators by not replying to them. Its like going to visit someone who instead of listening to you and contributing to the conversation is too busy watching their favourite soap.
Are Just Plain Rude: Just because someone has graced your blog with a comment is no reason for you to be rude to them just because you disagree with something they have said. Not only does it belittle them it affects the way others perceive you. If I happen to read a good post and then see you acting bad towards others who have commented on your blog I’m sure as hell not going to get involved and more likely than not I will never come back.
You Want Me To Subscribe: You’re kidding right? What makes your blog so special that I would go out of my way to subscribe to it? Heck, if I had to subscribe to every blog I comment on I would stop commenting altogether.
You Have A Blogger Blog: I’m sorry, you may be the best blogger out but unless I know you personally I rarely comment on Blogger blogs and my post on Why I Don’t Comment On Blogger Blogs explains why.
Poor Content Or Your Grammar Sucks: If you don’t take the time to proofread your post and fix all the grammatical errors, using paragraphs, sentences and capitals when necessary, why should I take the time to comment?
What Prevents You From Commenting: They say you should always finish a post by asking a question to solicit information from your readers and so I leave it up to you guys to add to the conversation.

Taking The Time To Think Before Clicking Submit

I think there is a time in everyone’s lives when you regret having said something. This could be because you were angry or because you were so caught up in the excitement of the moment that you let something slip out that was better left unsaid.

While this is true in the real world it should never happen in the online world because when online you have the time to step back from any given situation before writing a post, commenting on another bloggers post or even when replying to a comment left on your blog. The repercussions of not doing this can be seen on my In Defence Of A Bloggers Right To Review A Product where the blogger concerned did a lot of damage to his reputation, so much so that many people said they would never deal with him again.

I would like for you to take a moment from your busy schedule to watch this video as it highlights the point I am trying to make. This video clip shows how not taking the time to think before speaking can lead to some very dire consequences.

Cool huh? So let that be a warning to you as you float around the blogosphere, think twice, or even three times before clicking on the submit button, because once you’ve done that it very hard to take it back.

Release The Child In You And Become A Better Blogger

I remember when I was a kid all those years ago and my parents took my sister with them on a holiday to Italy and after a few short months when they returned she spoke perfect Italian. She couldn’t speak English, although she understood it, and whenever we asked something she always replied in Italian. Unfortunately it didn’t take that long before she picked up English again and as she did so her grasp on Italian dropped off.

Those of you who are parents have most likely noticed how children soak things up like a sponge. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they haven’t acquired all the barriers that adults use that prevent them from moving forward. When we get confronted with a new language, rather than trying to learn it we would rather get them to learn ours; it’s so much easier that way isn’t it? It’s sort of like a wall we put up that prevents us from learning.

The other thing that holds us back is negativity. We don’t attempt things because we’re scared that we will fail. Too bad really considering that it’s those failures that teach us important lessons and by not allowing ourselves to fail we remain ignorant in life. Not so the little ones, they just do it, and if they fall down they get up and try again.

I reckon we should be able to apply this to our blogs. We should become more childlike. Rather than sitting back worrying if what we’ve written is good enough, post it and fix it latter if need be. How many drafts have you got just sitting there waiting for the time when you think it’s good enough for the world to see? They may never see it unless you act now and take the chance.

We must open our minds and allow the world to seep in, only then will we find those topics that have been evading us. If you’re really stuck, don’t just sit there worrying about it. Go out for a walk, admire your surroundings and relax. Let the blog recede into the outer recess of your mind letting the rest of the world filter in, and sooner or later you will notice the glimmer of ideas forming. Kids don’t worry about things nearly so much as adults do.

It’s unfortunate that they lose their innocence and sponge-like qualities as they grow older. Perhaps those who have made it in this world of ours have maintained some of those qualities and are able to see and grasp ideas and work them into something that they can use, where the rest of us see them as stumbling blocks.

Happy New Year to everyone, may the new year be full of pleasant surprises, may it be joyous and may all your problems be small ones that can be easily overcome.

I thought that for my first post of the year I would like to share a bit of link love and the first one to get some is the first commentator of the year

Tom of The Home Business Archive. I especially liked his post on How To Dominate At Social Networking, and I’m hoping that his post has provided me the key to open the door to my social networking skills.
Blogging Tips is next on the link love list and this blog is all about taking your blog to the next level. This blog seems to have several authors and the one that caught my eye was Yawanda Black’s Blogging Jobs: 3 Ways to Land More Blogging Gigs in 2009 which may well prove to be a boon for those wanting to make a bit of extra blogging cash this year.
I must not forget to mention a fellow Aussie’s blog, Lifehacker who has a sleuth of techie tips, but the post that I stumbled on was How To De-Kernelise Microwave Popcorn. But make sure you don’t leave before checking out some of his real ‘techie’ stuff.
For the motorist enthusiasts, you should seriously consider checking out Car Advice.com.au, yeah, I know, another Aussie, but can I help it if we produce great bloggers? Seeing as how we are in the holiday season and how many people may be considering a driving holiday I thought his post on Safe Overtaking would be very apt for the occasion.
Last, but by no means least, I can’t finish this post without linking to the Top Finance Blog which is run by my mate Mitch who also has several other prominent blogs. Mitch has just recently acquired this blog and I can see it becoming quite popular once word gets out. The post I found particularly interesting is Governor Patterson’s Budget Crisis. Considering the latest economic crisis I’ve found it interesting, being an Aussie, to see the viewpoint from an American rather than it being rehashed by one of our journalists.

Well that is it for the first of many Link Love Posts. I’ve decided to make it a regular so that I can share with my readers those blogs that I find interesting on my journey through the Blogosphere.
