Woopra Analytics Providing Real Time Stats
I have been using Google Analytics for a little while and although it provides a lot of useful information I didn’t like the fact that the data seems delayed by at least 24 hours. It would be a hell of a lot better if it could give an analysis of what was happening on my blog in real time. Luckily I came across something that would do just that. It’s called Woopra and it’s just what the blogger or webmaster ordered.
I can’t give you a proper review of it yet as I’ve only just started using it yesterday, but there is one thing that I have tested, and it seems to work fine. Once I installed the the code in the footer, there is also a WordPress plugin available, and downloaded a program to the computer I discovered that apart from collecting real time data I was able to initiate a chat with my readers.

I am now able to see what visitors are doing on my blog in real time, including which post they are reading, whether or not they leave a comment and I’m pretty sure that it even shows if they click on a link. So, if you see a little box pop up in the bottom right hand side titled Woopra Chat, that says “Webmaster:” followed by a message, please don’t run away because it’s only little old me wanting to say hi. So far I have chatted with Dennis who’s looking for guest bloggers, Mitch who is trying to improve the style and appearnce of his Firefox and I think I have also managed to scare off Kristi and I dearly hope that the experience does not set off another episode of sleep paralysis. I’m not sure what happened to Pheak Tol, perhaps I caught him at the wrong moment and he was analyzing his writers block post to see if he could add anything to it.
This seems like the perfect addition to those sites who may require a one on one with their prospective customers, but for me I just want to have fun.
If you do stop to chat I promise not to take too much of your time.

I took a look at Woopra and its a nice program and looks professional, however its missing a few vital features that I would love to have in an analytics app that isnt Google Analytics. Visitor segmentation, so you can put visitors into groups then present them with different information or emails. Campaign management would be great to get more detailed with online and offline campaigns and link it it with all the online data, not just search referrals. Parameter string parsing is a must for tracking the origin of visits. And if you can have all that so you can track a visitor across multiple sites as well then it would be awesome.

Now that would be a package and a half Matt, and I don’t know if there is a package that would do all that, but if there was I bet you it would set you back at least a couple of bucks. It does show you the normal parameters like where they came from, IP address, what they did while on your site and that sort of thing. I’ve still got a bit of investigating to do but so far I am impressed.

Yeah there are a couple of systems that offer those specs. Google Analytics does most of it, but I just dont like the idea of giving them more data that is necessary sometimes. Then theres enterprise solutions like Webtrends, Unica Netinsight, Omniture, Coremetrics and Yahoo’s Indextools. Im hoping that Yahoo will open up their solution to compete with Google at some point.

Truthfully, I never knew, a;though I imagined, that so many different programs existed, and I assume that there are heaps more. I’m not a real stats freak, and I only really tried this one out because of it’s chat feature, but I am glad I did.

Hi Sire, I’m going to give it a shot with hotblogtips.com. I just registered and waiting for site approval. I use Google Analytics and a different plugin on Extreme Ezine but to tell you the truth I don’t check the stats very often. I’m hoping Woopra will be easier to access and understand.

Shit Brian, I just realized who you were. Man, you must have more sites than I do! As for the package, I really like it. I have it running in the background and it’s as smooth as anything. It keeps me updated every minute of the day, I just have to bring it up to the screen to see what is happening on the blog.
[Reply]
Sire,
I’m going to set this up today. Very cool features. The chat option sounds amazing, but it would probably scare the crap out of someone. Big brother seems to be watching more and more these days.
Great tip, thanks!

Well Tam, I don’t see why it should scare anyone, unless it opens up with a bang. Shit! Maybe I should turn on my speaker to test this theory out.
[Reply]
I’ve been using it since beta opened; great tool…it has a few small issues…there are discrepancies between it and analytics’s and it has a tendency to freeze up…but the update seemed to have solve that and the disappearing stat issue.
Its maturing very nicely.

The stats for Google Analytics update each night at midnight for me. At times, there are added visitors and page views the next day too. Overall, it’s solid. Especially since it’s free. Woopra sounds like a strong program. Looking forward to hearing your full review in the coming weeks. I’d be interested in a comparison of the two, which I’m guessing you’ll do. Are you using both at the moment?

Yep, but I don’t think it would be fair to do a full comparison until it is out of Beta. I can say that as I am running part of the program my computer, updates are extremely fast and it’s good watching people move around the site. I think it also has access to gravatars as well as it will show the you who the visitor is if a gravatar exists.
[Reply]
I may have to look into this one Sire, I’ve been using Wassup and Google Analytics since I started in the blogosphere, do you have any experience with those two? How does Woopra compare?
I’m happy with google/wassup, but would love for the opportunity to chat with users or even for them to chat with me.

I’m not scared off. Even if I were, it would be a good thing, because then I would have another episode of sleep paralysis, and get to try the whole lucid dream technique with it.
That does look like an awesome tool though. I downloaded the beta awhile ago, but never got around to playing with it. I’ll have to give it a shot soon!

I remember us talking about this a while ago, but it didn’t quite hit me until now, even though we talked using the chat feature last night. Neat stuff, but for now, with everything else going on, I’ll probably stick with Analytics. Then again, you know me; you introduce something, then I suddenly “discover” it a month later. lol

Oh hell no!
I know what happens if I had live updates. I would be sitting there watching people on the site & yelling things like -”Hey, why didn’t you check out the post that goes with that one?” “Why are you leaving?”….. Having then the ability to chat with them – I would have no readers. I’d end up sending those messages in the chat to people. LOL!
I have worked a live help on one of our old sites & I know I would be nuts watching.
I do have Analytic’s on our sites but, I am having problems with it. So, I will see how this works out for you guys before I mess with it.
I see that Woopra flashes acrossed the bottom bar, must be updating.

Hi Sire,
Wow I had no idea about this service! I imagine there could be a lot of fun to it!!! But at this point I think I am happy just to have time to quickly check my stats on analytics every few days or so. As Sheryl above said, it might be too much fun and kind of addicting to track what is going on at every moment.
But I definitely want to check it out as I like staying connected to as much current tech and service stuff on the web as I can – so thanks :)

With more and more technology tracking the traffic to our sites, I wonder how basic readers who aren’t in the blogging community feel about it. We know their location, movements on the site, time on there. Do most none industry people realize how much of their info in the hands of the sites they visit? I thanked a person the other day for visiting my site. He said, how did you know? Let him know that I saw in in my stats. Was it little surprised it was possible.

I don’t think that most would care unless they were hackers. I used to run a BBS, as the owner I was able to see a lot more of what they were doing online than what even Woopra offers. I was even able to eavesdrop on conversations they were having with other members.

Seriously there are thousands of membership sites, both free and cost-based (and the free ones always have multiple “upgrade options”) in every niche imaginable.
It’s long been said that this is the best and “easiest” money maker on the ‘net. Money each month like clockwork.
Easy my ass. More and more can’t seem to keep members for more then a month or 3 because their upkeep sucks! “Upkeep” meaning continually serving fresh whatever was paid for in the first place,

Sire, if I remember correctly you were perhaps the first person I spoke to through the Woopra chat on my site.
The feature I like best is on the dashboard you can see what people searched for to find you. If you double click that search term you go directly to the Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN etc. search and see exactly where you show up.
The worst feature is no manual or guide, so it took a while to figure out a lot of stuff.

Thanks for recommending this. I am always on the lookout for an alternative to Google Analytics.
One thing worth mentioning is that Woopra is still in beta. From their installation guide – “Woopra is under beta testing development. There will be downtimes. There will be problems.”. This is worth keeping in mind if you are going to be depending on the stats.
The bigger problem is that sites are restricted to 10,000 page views a day. This completely rules it out for me, which is a shame.
