WassupBlog Alive And Kicking After Transfering To BlueHost
First off I would like to send a special thank you to everyone who either Tweeted or emailed me voicing their concern over WassupBlog being suspended. As I explained to them it all happened one morning whilst checking to see whether there were any updates to the comments section that I discovered my account had been suspended.
It wasn’t long after that I realized that everything hosted on that site was also suspended, so the host virtually cut me off.
I immediately sent an email and soon after received a reply that WassupBlog was using too much CPU. OK I said, if that’s the case why suspend my other blogs. He then reinstated everything but this one. I then proceeded to look for another host to move my prized blog to. I decided on BlueHost. Seeing as how I’ve been promoting it on my header for so long I thought it only fair that I should put it through it’s paces.
I migrated the blog over, making sure that I backed up all the databases and everything seemed to go without a hitch until I tried to access the admin pane. Nothing! I mean after trying to log in all I got was a blank page.
Googling was of no use so I finally decided to bit the bullet and call the help desk. Out comes my trusty iPod Touch, and with the help of the Skype application I rang the tech guys. I got hold of Lane who tried for over an hour to get everything working, and I went through different stages of euphoria and depression as I saw parts of my blog working and then not working. In the end Lane said he could do all he could do and that perhaps it was a WordPress issue. I thanked him and went to bed, as it was in the early hours of the morning, but only after using FileZilla to FTP the latest WP files overwriting the existing ones, in the hope that it may replace a corrupt file that eventuated because of the migration.
Upon waking I went straight to the computer only to find nothing had changed,
so it wasn’t a corrupt file issue. Then began a trial and error campaign in search of whatever was causing the problem.
To cut a long story short, the WP-Super Cache plugin, upon activation, creates two files, advanced-cache.php and wp-cache-config.php. When I renamed these files everything worked, and when I restored them it didn’t, and so I deleted the damn things.
This deactivated the plugin, and so with some trepidation I reactivated it and kept my fingers crossed.
You bloody beauty, it worked.
Reactivating the plugin recreated those two files so I can only assume the ones I deleted were corrupt or something. Anyway, the blog’s up and running again and I can finally start to relax a little.
I have to admit it was a pleasant experience getting some technical help, even though he wasn’t able to do anything it was pretty cool that he spent so much time trying to resolve my issue. I have a feeling WassupBlog is going to enjoy it’s new host.
I highly recommend you to get your FlexSqueeze copy today!

Good deal, Sire, and I’m glad you’re back. I’m still not going to use WP Super-Cache, as it just seems to be so wonky, and man, I just don’t need to do wonky anymore.

Anyway, good thing you transferred to, hopefully, much better host.

Hi Sire,
Two questions …
1) lol, why were you promoting a webhost that you weren’t even using?
2) more importantly, did you find out what was causing the excessive CPU usage? Especially if you’re still on a “shared” (the $6.95) account, Bluehost will suspend you just as quickly if your site is too much of a process hog.
In any case, glad to see you got your blog back up.

Hey Todd, I promote a lot of things I don’t use mate.
As for the usage, I think that perhaps something went viral or something. I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary and perhaps it was a combination of things. Apart from this one I hosted three other blogs on that host, so I figured having Wassup all on it’s own would be the best thing I could do.
I’ve disable some plugins that I thought may be chewing up the CPU, and now I reckon I will just have to wait and see.

@Todd: The one time Bluehost temporarily suspended my account, it was a day I received about 16,000 hits. And it was only hogging resources because of a bad plugin! I managed to get it back online in about five minutes and it served the front page of Digg all the rest of the day.
And now, Bluehost is trying CPU throttling instead of cpu-related suspensions. So rather than shutting down, the busy sites just load a little slower at peak times.
@Sire (if you don’t mind) who were you hosting with and what kind of traffic was the site getting at the time of the problem? It could help influence my future hosting-related purchasing decisions and blog editorials :)

Hi John,I only found out about CPU throttling yesterday, and it’s a brilliant idea.
This blog used to hosted on Host Smart, and I’d be lucky if it got 200 hits a day let alone 16000, but they said wassupblog.com/index.php was using 72.0% CPU? I don’t know how that could be, but then they’re the only one that have access to those stats.
What gets me is they want me to fix it but don’t tell me where to look.

Thanks Doug, it was a bit hectic there for awhile, especially not knowing what the problem was. Even though it was indirectly plugin related, disabling all plugins didn’t help. It was only after I deleted those two plugin related files.

Yeah, well it was more of a fluke than anything else. I noticed them sitting in the wp-content directory and on a whim I wandered what would happen if I renamed it, and the rest you know.

Glad to see you back up and happy about it. I can understand why you were a bit angry about them just cutting you off. Sometimes people just don’t think what will happen.
I hope that things will be better and that you won’t have any more issues.

Not that I was angry George, just disappointed at the over reaction, which resulted in the service being less than what it should be.

Uff, I hate it when tech stuff doesn’t work – that’s why I replaced my PC with a Mac, now it just works :D
But it’s good to have you back in the air again. Who would have thought that WP-Super Cache plugin was the culprit. Maybe that was also the plugin using too much CPU at your old host?

Glad to see you are back and running again. This whole experience must have given you something to remember by. Good choice on BlueHost, I use them and up-to-date, I have not had (yet – i hope it stays that way), any problems whatsoever with them.
Anyway,I did try to visit your site and I was redirected to a page where you informed everyone about your move and suggesting your visitors to visit your other blogs while the process is complete. I went to those blogs and they were loading pretty good (e.g. LOB, TopS**Aids, etc). Where they also hosted under the same account as this?

Glad you are back with us. Unlike you, I don’t have the patients to figure these issues out on my own. I like the sledge hammer method myself, although not quite as reliable as a help desk.
When things don’t work on our sites, that is Doug’s problem and he has to get it running again. There is a lot to be said for a partnership. Still, if your dictatorship is working for you…
Looking forward to your next post, and the creative use of smiley’s in the process! Do you get a nickel every time you use one? My nickname is Happy, so I gotta give you props for your smiley catalog.

What was the reason they gave. I moved this blog from another host for that very reason and I’m loving it. The throttling seems to be working a treat.
Did they give you a reason? How many visits a day were you getting? How about a link to your site, if you have it up and running yet?

What bullshit web host were you using then? Damn they should be schooled in manners! Not even a single warning before suspending your blog. SUCKS big time. Good to know that the folks @ BlueHost are doing a good job of keeping you satisfied.
