Too many parents let their children down wanting to be friends rather than taking the responsibility to take the hard road of providing them guidance. They need parents who can guide then and not another friend.

You're so right about television glamorising sex and it's a shame that so many don't show the heartache involved in not having the proper values. Kids feel that because everyone seems to be doing it must be the right thing to do. You're also right about them not being emotionally equipped to handle such situations. Too bad that so many have to learn the facts of life the hard way.

Hi Sire

Television glamorises sex and doesn't show the heartache that often accompanies situations like the one in the poem. sadly, I have counselled so many women who have so many regrets from their younger days and wrong decisions they made.

The way society is headed these days (here in Oz anyway) there appears to be no moral absolutes and therein lies one of the problems. A lot of young people are crying out for love and not getting it within a stable family environment. They go looking for it elsewhere.

I remember having a talk with my niece when she was about 14. She is now 21 and engaged. I explained to her that although she may be aware of a lot more than I did at her age, emotionally she was still the same age. Herein lies another problem. Emotionally they are still young, but they know too much....usually knowledge gained from all the wrong places!

I can appreciate how protective you must feel for your daughter. That's how it should be Sire. My Father was my hero and he taught my brother how to treat girls from an early age. He in turn has always been a real respector of women and treats his wife wonderfully.

The idea of this poem came to me one day as my young daughter was growing up. She's 18 next month and I have feelings of dread every time she goes out.

I think your perspective was right on. Sadly it's not what many girls want, but they go through with it anyway thinking if they do he'll stay.

So why is that Kristi? Could it be a primeval instinct that man must have to protect him for emotions that in ancient times could have got him killed or are some men just assholes.

I think women tend to be hurt more. Even when they go in thinking it is just a friend's with benefits kind of thing, there is still that wonderful hormone or whatever it is that is released in women that make them feel bonded with their lovers. So if there is no love in the relationship, the woman will feel like they are missing something, whereas the man will not.

Yeah, I know how things have changed a lot, I don't have my head completely submerged in a hole as I do take a peek into the real world every now and again. I'm not sure I like what I see. I would much prefer women take control as men tend to think with what they have in their pants instead of what's in their head.

So, which side misses out in unloving relationship?

I think this is quite true for many people and you're certainly right that people like that are not worth it. Although it seems to me that with a new found sexual freedom (over the last 50 years) some women are just as frivolous as men and sex doesn't mean that much anymore.

Even in loving relationships sex means different things for men and women — women get just as much emotional satisfaction from other things that men might not. However in unloving relationships there is no satisfaction for at least one side.
