I love Australia and so in this post I want to share a couple of things that make Australia unique. The first is called Anna Creek Station. I’ve heard on more than one occasion how Texans always boast as to how everything in Texas is bigger than anywhere else, well that’s only because those Texans haven’t been to Australia.
I’ve had a few relatives come over from Italy and they usually land on our front doorstep wanting to be shown Australia. Yep, sure, as if we could just hop in the car and drive them around over the week end. They just couldn’t comprehend the size of Australia until I explained to them that we could fit the whole of Italy comfortably into Victoria, and once I showed them Victoria on the map I think it finally dawned on them.
OK, back to Texas and Anna Creek Station. The biggest ranch in Texas at only 3000 square kms pales in comparison to Anna Creek Station which is 24000 square kms. Sorta makes on proud to live in the same state as that Station. If you would like to see some more sights of my home state you could always visit Scenic Adelaide.
Before leaving Texas and cattle stations I have a little joke for you.
A Texan farmer goes to Australia for a vacation. There he meets an Aussie farmer and gets talking. The Aussie shows off his big wheat field and the Texan says, “Oh! We have wheat fields that are at least twice as large”.
Then they walk around the ranch a little, and the Aussie shows off his herd of cattle. The Texan immediately says, ” We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cows”.
The conversation has, meanwhile, almost died when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field. He asks, “And what are those”? The Aussie replies with an incredulous look, “Don’t you have any grasshoppers in Texas”?

The second part of this post is because of a documentary that I watched yesterday. It’s about a unique cloud formation that occurs only in the northern of Australia. Called The Morning Glory Cloud, it’s so rare that people, including scientists and glider pilots come from all over the world to experience it, especially the glider pilots.
These pilots, the ones I saw were hang gliders, come to Burketown, Queensland, in the hope of riding the cloud. Some have actually called it cloud surfing, and watching that documentary I could see why. The thing about these clouds is that they are very unpredictable and for that reason many a disappointed glider leaves without getting the chance to ride the clouds, only to find that they missed it by a day.
I found this really cool video about the Morning Glory Cloud and I hope you find is as awesome as I did.

Dude, even though I’m a proud Kiwi, I have to say that Australia seems to be an awesome country. I’m really considering emigrating there in future like many Kiwis already have.

You better hurry up Gordie before we fill our quota of Kiwis.
I had a good laugh about the Texan farmer, made me smile now and I think it was my dose for the day.
My first time hearing about the ‘Morning Glory Cloud’, sounds very interesting.
Glad you liked the joke George. As for the cloud, I found it very interesting, especially as before yesterday I never knew it existed.
Sire, nice joke! LOL
I would love to visit Australia one day, the closest I have been is watching the Australian Open on TV this week though, maybe one day ….

One day mate, and you know that the Aussies threw all those matches so that our guests could win don’t you? :cheese1_ee:
The cloud formation is amazing.
And the joke was funny.
Thanks for sharing Sire.

No worries Glen, I just thought it would be good for a change of pace.
I’ve never been to Texas and don’t see myself having a reason to go there anytime soon, haha. So they can keep all of the big stuff, now the Morning Glory Clouds are awesome, I have seen them on Discovery before and it’s really amazing. Have you seen the “Northern Lights”? That’s really amazing.
.-= Extreme John´s last blog ..What is One Thing You HATE about this Place? =-.
Never seen the lights yet John, but I’m sure they would be something I would appreciate.
LOL – you introducing some Ozzie photos to compete with my NZ ones! Acutally digitally I have way more Ozzie pics – and Anna Creek features in quite a few of them – we drove the Oodinatta track and Coober Pedy between Birdsville and Ayers
Rock – it was quite a trip!
LMAO re the Texan – I was told by someone in Broken Hill that she had a Texan in the shop who wanted to argue about the postcard which puts Texas in one small corner of NSW – and we are not even talking about a big State here!

I’d love to go to Ayers Rock one day, actually trekking around Australia has always been a dream of mine.
As to New Zealand and clouds, aren’t you guys call ‘The Land Of The Long White Cloud?’
Loved to have been there when she told that Texan how big Texas really was
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the Morning Glory Clouds, so magnificent! Never seen anything like it. Hopefully someday will get to see it for real! The Texan joke, only one phrase to it — ‘ROTFLOL’! Australia is definitely in my to-visit list in near future.

All Australia needs is some people. If you aren’t careful you will get them.

Plenty of room Ralph, and we don’t mind as long as they come through the front door.
Hey Sire, when I land on your doorstep wanting to tour Australia I’ll have a couple weeks. Maybe we can saddle up a couple grasshoppers to save on gas.

Sure Brian, and when we’re through with them we can chuck em on the barbie with some prawns as appetizers. Naturally we’ll wash it down with some beer, or would you prefer some nice Aussie wine?
I hadn’t heard of the morning glory cloud. Interesting phenomenon. Another interesting phenomenon – that video was shot on my birthday!
I think Texans brag about how big their longhorns are to compensate for other things. If you know what I mean.
Maybe one day I’ll get to travel. I’ll add Australia as one of the ‘must visit’ stops along the way.

I think that no matter what country you visit they’re all bound to have great things to see, but none more than Australia. Of course I’m biased.
I have always wanted to visit Australia, maybe some day I will.

First, I liked the video.
Second, I now have to come to the defense of the state where I was born.
Let’s do a little comparison here, if we may. Anna Creek Station is about 85% larger than the largest ranch in Texas. However, South Australia is about 85% bigger than the state of Texas is. So, proportionally, they’re the same based on how much available land they’d be allowed to own.
Also, the overall population of South Australia is only 1.6 million people; there are 5 cities in Texas with more population than that. And all those people need space to live, so the farm could only be so big because of the state’s population.
So there!

Hi Sire,
Those morning glory clouds look amazing. Australia and New Zealand are on my “places to visit before I die” list. Seeing as I’m from Canada I’m thinking it will be during our winter months.
In your opinion what is the best month to visit?
Steve

Well, summer is from December to February but it can get quite hot at times, in the 40′s (centigrade. Spring can be pretty nice, and they reckon that it’s really nice in Flinders Ranges.
South Australia is about 85% bigger than the state of Texas is. So, proportionally, they’re the same based on how much available land they’d be allowed to own.
I suppose that is one way of looking at it
Wow, i’ve never seen clouds like that before. Any idea of what causes them? Does it have something to do with Antarctica?
