I suppose it all depends on the style of blog you started off with. If you start with a niche blog then that's what you need to stick with.

You can't cater to everyone, this is a lesson. One of my first mistakes about blogging is not setting a "niche" and being all over the place with my first blog. I would have readers cancel RSS subscription and tell me they were only interested in the Tech posts, or the Blogging tips, things like that. It was this that made me specialize a bit more knowing that I could only draw in one type of audience, can't really mix genres.

It starts with just one person Ralph and goes on from there, all you need is one to respond and the rest will come.

Don't give up buddy

This issue of finding out what your readers what hangs me up. I have asked but get very little response. How do you ask and what do you do to make readers want to respond?

The greatest thing you can do is know what people want and give it to them.

If you aren't sure what they want, ask. Once you know and you have so many to worry about then it comes time to explain things to everyone and hope the loyal customers will carry the words and take things to the next level on their own.

I also have another thought on this. Is it really being so nice to work so hard to sell something to someone you don't even know or have never even talked with? I'm talking here about writing up an email or even something of a comment just for starters.

I'd like to know the person at all, more than just reading their blog, before buying from them. You sell me more by involving me and acting after listening to what I've said and responding than you can selling me anything. At that point, however, buying something is definitely in the field.

Awesome article. You really are making a mark in the blogosphere.

James is blowing up the guy seems to be everywhere :) Nice work James, hopefully you will be stopping by to do a Guest Post on Extreme John at some point in the future.

Great work in this Guest Post James, one of the key things to me is the "loyalty" of your readers, if your not following through and working within your own community like Sire does on his blog then your not building loyalty. Without it finding success is going to take 3x as long.

I think that it is certainly important to maintain integrity. This is like being true to yourself and honest with your readers, as said above, but goes one step further. It is like asking yourself, would you write what you were writing if you knew no one would read it?. In other words, is there intrinsic value in your post?
