I’ve noticed lately that quite a few people have been doing weekly updates of what they’ve found interesting while surfing the net. Someone who is quite proficient at this is Kristi of Kikolani with her weekly Fetching Friday posts. She calls it her resources mashup and features the best articles that she’s stumbled throughout the week. Kristi will normally break them up into categories and each link is the title of the post.
Then there is Ditesco’s Weekly Echo, where he also does a weekly round up of blog posts that he’s found to be interesting, fun or informative. I feel that the reasons for doing these weekly posts goes beyond the valuable link luv that the bloggers have extended to those whose posts they’ve enjoyed so much. It’s also a great way to share those same articles with their readers, articles that they feel the readers may well miss out on were it not for their weekly posts. These posts take a lot of commitment and dedication because, if done properly, they would take quite a bit of time to put together.
If I was going to tackle something of this nature I would want to do it in such a way that it minimizes the time and workload needed to write a post that is full of good articles and not just a pile of crappy links. If it was all too hard I would probably get sick of the whole process within a couple of weeks. I would also want my posts to stand out from all the other weekly compilations.
So the question I asked myself is what is the most efficient way to put one of these posts together? What I plan to do from now on is to have WordPress open as I go around blog hopping. Every time I come across a unique post that I think my readers will appreciate I will make an entry giving a link and a short description of the post. Naturally you will save the post as a draft ready for the following day.
By the end of the week the post is almost complete and all that is required would be putting the links into categories if so desired, and short introduction and conclusion. I reckon this is a whole lot better than waiting to the end of the week to write it, where you spend most of your time scratching your head as to what posts you liked and where the hell to find them again.

Great idea! We surely have an round up article in weekend by this way.

Thanks Dana
Saving links throughout the week – I think that is the only way to do weekly roundups! Isn’t that the whole point behind roundups anyways? That they’re the things you found interesting throughout the whole week and not just on that day you started to write that post?
That’s the whole point. I’ve done similar things before but half the time I couldn’t remember where I saw the posts.
Hi Sire,
I found that the easiest way to track the posts for these round-ups is to simply use either the “share” or the “star” in Google Reader. Then when you’re ready to do you post, you can just go back and look at what you liked.
I’m going to start up my “good stuff” again soon … but to be honest, weekly was just too much work. I was spending a good couple of hours getting the correct links, and writing little blurbs of my own thoughts to go with them.
I still want to do these type of posts, but instead of every week, I’m thinking more like once a month. And instead of sharing every single story I liked, I’ll probably be a bit more selective.
In any case, I think what type of stories you as a blogger choose to link to can also tell your readers a bit about yourself. Looking forward to see what kind of stuff you share on your list.
Have fun with it!
.-= Todd Morris´s last blog ..Another Tough Day At The Office =-.
True Todd, but that would take more time. It means going through your favorites to see which ones you want to use, rereading the posts so you know how to introduce it etc.
My way the post is virtually done.
Great idea. I personally like this type of article as it give me a great index for my reading and save lot of my time.

Thanks Arafat, I hope you can put it to good use.
Hello Sire. Just logged in for a while and I could not help but notice the linkluv, which as you know I truly appreciate, thanks. I am not yet fully back from my mini hiatus but I am already looking forward to your own roundups. The method you are thinking of doing sounds about just right and avoids the pressure of looking for posts and publishing them in a hurry. B4 I forget, happy new year:)
.-= DiTesco´s last blog ..DiTesco’s 2009 Yearly Recap =-.
Same to you Ditesco, and I’m not promising weekly roundups. I’m just formulating a system in case I decide to do regular roundups.
Hmmm , this is a nice way to interact with bloggers and also it helps many newbies who are reading the roundups .
Is it possible to have a roundup of post everyday?? What do you think dude ?? :)
.-= Sunil Jain@blogging´s last blog ..How to use different Themes for WordPress posts or pages =-.
You could but I think people would lose interest as would the person doing the roundups.
I am telling this because, I have never seen any blogs doing daily roundups , i think what you have told is wright :)
Initially it would be interesting for users , but once they get to know about the blogs , which links i am posting , it will make them to divert to the respective blogs :(
.-= Sunil Jain@gupshup´s last blog ..The Ultimate guide to Different Downloadable Movies Format =-.
I look forward to it Sire.
I am more interested in making note of a blog to keep an eye on or add to a reader instead of specific posts. Such a thing requires less work for me! LOL Although your workflow for these posts seems pretty practical and therefore won’t be much work at all.
You could simply save the post to delicious but tag it #week1 #week2, amongst other useful tags. Then you can simply browse your specific tags at the end of the week. This would be even more useful to other bloggers and their blog. It slaps them into the delicious land of awesomeness. aka another stat that a blogger can reference at some point. *The basic overview or recap can be noted in delicious too – then you simply copy-paste.
The same could probably be done for the other sites like stumbleupon and digg, I assume.
Just wanted to bring it up because of your commitment to the blogosphere.
.-= Scott Webb´s last blog ..Blog Critique: An Objective Look at Your Own Blog =-.
That’s the idea Scott. I’m just using WP drafts as an example. You could save it to word or as you’re suggesting to delicious. Must look into that as I haven’t had too much to do with them. Thanks for the tip.
Sire, this is one where you’ll be on your own, or with all the other folks, because I’m not going to make it a regular part of my blog. I just don’t have that kind of time, and man, I’d drive myself nuts! You’re right, though, it does make for a ready made post of some type.
.-= Mitch´s last blog ..Need Help Setting Goals? =-.
I’m not saying I was going to do this on a regular basis Mitch, I just figured if I was to do so this is the way I would approach it.
Ah, I see. Not a bad approach, I’d have to say; probably how the other folks do it already.
.-= Mitch´s last blog ..Subtle Tech Racism =-.
Maybe, maybe not. Either way sometimes I just have to air the old brain out by posting an idea or two. Ain’t much room in there these days and I have to make sure I’ve got enough room in their for a chess move or two.

I’m sure you meant a losing chess move or two, although right now you’ve got me pinned down in one of those games.
.-= Mitch´s last blog ..5 Ways Poker Is Like Blogging =-.
Actually, sometimes I don’t know what the hell I mean.
I actually do spend a little extra time on Friday writing those posts (or Thursday night). One thing I do is stumble all of the articles I want to include. I have been alternating between that and subscribing to blogs I have found good content on, and then going through the subscriptions. It does work better if you have a template and just fill it in every day as you find posts, but sometimes you may not have the time to do that daily, so you have to find an alternate way, like the bookmarking.
Thanks for including me as a good example, and I look forward to what you do for a roundup!
.-= Kikolani@Blogging´s last blog ..Fetching Friday – Resources Mashup, Hawaiian Relaxation & More =-.
I can only imagine how much time it takes for you to put those roundups together Kristi. I don’t expect mine to be anywhere near as comprehensive as yours not do I expect to do one every week. I reckon I’ll leave that to the Queen of Roundups.
Last year I did weekly roundup posts for .. oh, about three weeks :) What I did was ‘stumble’ posts I liked as I found them, and then at the end of the week went back to StumbleUpon to see what I’d found. That way there were two shots of promotion for posts I liked.
.-= Andrea Hill´s last blog ..Is there such a thing as too many comments? =-.
Cool, so I could stumble first and then post it into my draft section.
That way I reward them as well as making it easy to complete the post. Cool tip Andrea
Good idea Sire. I do the same thing when I get an idea to blog about. I create a draft then go back to it.
.-= Rose´s last blog ..How to make a twitter background =-.
Great minds must think alike Rose.
Hey, Sire,
I tried doing this for two weekends a few months back. I called it the “Saturday Spew and Shout Out.” It was okay, but traffic back then on my blog wasn’t much and in weekends it just crashed. I’ll reconsider doing something like this in future when my blog’s traffic is higher. I may start off by doing a monthly summary with links to other posts I’ve found interesting and then go from there.
Cheers!
.-= Gordie´s last blog ..Old Tianjin Is Destroyed. =-.
Sounds like a plan Gordie and the Saturday Spew has a certain ring about it.
Yeah, I have seen it in a lot of blogs around, but I never thought of this post style much (although I did make my first of this kind…Best of 2009, a year’s roundup). Now, that you’ve elaborated on it and put some sort of system to it, I get a feeling that a lot of those (including me) who haven’t made this a regular practice will now entertain the idea.
.-= James Moralde´s last blog ..Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga =-.
That’s what we’re here for James, to help others and to give them ideas. I’m glad I was able to help.
I also admire Kristi for her Fetching Friday post series. She make some good collection of article on this series.
As you said above I also prefer the tips, Every time you like any article just save it with some description and later post those articles on your weekly series.
.-= chandan@work at home jobs´s last blog ..Most favorite blogs of work at home blogger =-.
I have come across those weekly roundup posts and I think they are great because then I get to see posts that I normally wouldn’t see in my regular travels. It makes me find other blogs that I haven’t seen.
It would seem to me, well for me anyways, it would take awhile to put this together. It takes me a little while to add a few links to my posts and some of these weekly round ups like Kristis have like 20? or so and catagorized like you said. Phew sounds like a lot of work. I think you have a good idea though. Do it on a daily basis keep as a draft and finish it off at the end of the week. Great idea!
Thanks Jim, luckily for me I do manage to come up with a half decent idea now and again.
You have shared a good idea. I will try this. If i like a particular article i will bookmark it in my system. Whenever i want to write roundup i will just check the bookmark..
.-= Deepika´s last blog ..Contest @FamousBloggers: Win Prizes worth $500 =-.

I have used a similar approach when gathering information for a post [not necessarily a round-up list]. Yet, I’m with you on trying to remember where I found something interesting, especially when I want to share that something interesting with others.
.-= Anne´s last blog ..I Always Admired Mr. Franklin, But Now I Truly Respect Him =-.
I know, it’s such a pain, especially if the blogger writes a lot of post, then it’s not enough you remember the blog, you also have to search the archives.

First I found this kind of posts fascinating, but now I mostly skip them. Why? Because people tend to put too many links / recommendations into them. I prefer to read a blog post about, lets say the “three top SEO posts I read last week” then “999 great posts I read last week”. Often they are not much more then link lists with little information / opinion added. I think the old slogan of “less is more” applies also to such round-up posts. Just my two Czech Koruna and, btw, Happy New Year to everybody ;-) SY
.-= hospitalera @gummicribrail´s last blog ..Comment by =-.
That’s why I would do it a little different. I would have fewer links and every link would come with a short description.
[...] The Best Way To Do Weekly Roundup Posts – Sire at Wassupblog is one of those bloggers like Sully that just gives more than he takes! If you are not subscribed to this straight forward no nonsense blog, you should be! [...]
Like you Sire, I usually have a recently discovered link right in the post that I’m doing for that day. I also use the book mark system which works great for what I blog about; food:) Another method I like is when I find a place I really like I pop it into my custom search engine. Then when I’m looking for something particular, my favorite site with the needed information pops up and I get to give some link-luv. Works for me!
P.S. Thanks for the link to Kikolani’s website. Oh so much work…

I was just over at Kikolani, and I noticed it was a very good way to do weekly roundup also.
A lot of people responded to say thanks.
That just goes to show how much people appreciate it.
Good idea, Sire! Roundup posts usually get a lot of interest and it is a good way to show appreciation to bloggers who have helped you.As a bonus you will get track backs and people will submit your post to social sites.
I am going to make a roundup post soon, I just need to find a good topic first.

Thanks Tom, but it’s not just to show appreciation of those that have helped you, it’s also to share with others valuable and interesting sites that you’ve come across.
Thanks for your comment and good luck with roundup post.
Why not just limit it to 5 links tops each post? I think sometimes less is more. I see a lot of these link mashups and if there are too many from a wide variety of sources I mentally check out. My blog is about marketing, it would probably serve me well to shoot out 5 marketing related links once a week or so. If I start dropping links to gardening for the sake of “helping” a friend do I do it at the expense of alienating my audience?
.-= The Real Josh´s last blog ..Develop A Story In Order To Sell More Products =-.
I agree that less is more Josh, and in regards to your friends blog, rather than just placing a link I would tell your readers where that link will take them and why they might enjoy the trip, then it will be up to them whether they decide to visit or not.
Weekly round up posts are a good option as it will give your readers a chance to what you are doing whole week. Apart from that it helps to create a strong relationship with fellow bloggers. I was doing weekly roundup post on my technology blog.
.-= Ricky´s last blog ..Releasing New WordPress Theme Pltheme Beta Version =-.
Creating a strong relationship is always a good thing.
I have been wanting to start doing round ups, but my fear is that I would give up in the first week or two (like you said). I think maybe I’ll start doing something monthly rather than weekly.
The drafting idea is a good one that I can adopt though. Extreme John does a really good weekly Smashup as well.
;)
.-= Ms. Freeman´s last blog ..Carry a Notebook Everywhere You Go =-.
Monthly sounds good, and I’m glad I was able to offer some advice, and yes, John does a killer job with his Smashup. Which reminds me, if I go down this track I will need a great unique name for the round ups.
Sounds like a great plan. I’m all for working smarter, not harder :-)
Indeed, a weekly round up is a good idea — it helps the blogger share valuable posts which could be helpful to its readers. I’m gonna create one now. Thanks!
