I have always been an advocate of hosting your own blog or website and there are many reasons for using the services of a decent webhosting package.
- Probably the most important is the fact that it allows you to pick your very own domain, one that is most suited to your product or service and one that allows the best SEO advantages and is well suited for the many marketing techniques.
- It shows that you are serious about your blog or website. How professional do you think it looks to an advertiser or prospective client when they see that you have opted for one of the many free services.
- Individuality, is also an important point as by hosting your very own site, not only do you have your very own domain that you can proudly promote to the world, it also allows you countless more ways to individualize your site or blog.
- Another important point, one that strives with point #1 for dominance is that it gives you security and complete control. Security in that you don’t have to worry about your ‘free’ site suddenly going missing, causing you to lose everything that you put into it. Control in that you don’t have to worry about your writing style or of offending someone. I know of people who blog on community sites who have had their blogs terminated because someone didn’t agree with what they had to say.
- SEO, is another good point as it allows you greater control to apply some of the many SEO techniques available, more than if you decided to go for some of those free packages.
- You also get to keep all the revenue generated from your blog. With those free sites you only get to keep a portion and most of the time you don’t actually get to see any of it.
- Many a web host will also offer you incentives for joining, anything from a free domain for life to free templates for your up and coming website.
- The ability to earn more income. I can safely say, as a blogger who has used both forms of blogs, free and self hosted, that I’ve made way more money on those blogs I host on my won domain. Most webhosts also have an affiliate program and how much easier is it to promote something that you are completely happy with than something that you have never tried. The money I have earned from promoting my hosts have more than paid for the hosting cost itself.
- The benefit of adding subdomains is also a great plus as this allows you to expand your site and earning capacity
- There are many more advantages for hosting your own blog or website and I have decided to leave no.10 open so that you my devoted readers and commentators can add their own reasons to my Top 10.
In case some of you are not sure which is the best package for you there are many sites on the net that rate individual hosts and it is always a good idea to see how other people have rated webhosting sites. This may give you more insite as to which package may suit you.
As a side note, I would like to point out that the tree links point out to the three Hosts that I personally use for my blogs and websites.

Good comments, but not all of us are able to!
Cheers,
Peter
How would a ‘Sire’ community blog go?
I’ve noticed that you have yet to take the plunge. If you don’t mind be asking, how come you’ve decided not to host your own blog?
You might want to Google on ‘make money online’ and note that 2 of the top 5 listings are plain old ‘unprofessional’ Blogger blogs. How much money per month would you think they make in that position on a highly competitive search term?
Frank C´s Last blog post..Earn Online Cash with a Niche Adsense Blog
Thanks for your comment Frank and I did have a look at those two blogs and whilst they did rank highly for that particular keyword phrase, all I am saying is that whatever money they are making on their blogs now, perhaps they could increase it if they were to host it on their very own domain.
All good points Sire. There are limits and restrictions when using wordpress.com and blogger.com that can easily be avoided with a hosted site with it’s own domain.
Brian´s Last blog post..Interview with Yan Susanto, Blogger Turned Internet Marketer
Thanks Brian, although Frank may feel that I was having a go at Blogger.com, I wasn’t, I was just trying to point out that there are certain advantages to hosting your own site. If they are happy on blogger who am I to tell them otherwise.
One additional point in favor of hosting your own blog is you keep your blog! I’ve listened to folks who have lost their blogs (simply deleted) over at Blogger or WordPress for being to self-promotional. :(

Coco´s Last blog post..Are You Validated?
you are so right Colleen, and I think that coincides with #4, Security and complete control. I’ve actually lost a couple of blogs that went down because the site folded for one reason or another.
We’ve been fairly involved in Squidoo. In Squidoo’s SquidU forums if a person does a search for WordPress or Blogger, then threads will pop up with folks lamenting their deleted blogs. No warning either!
Coco – Kennewick Real Estate´s Last blog post..Are You Validated?
I know the feeling. Even though I have always hosted my own blogs I also have several of those free blog types, some of which have now disappeared. On, writingup.com, had a huge community and even that one bit the dust.
Having recently started a second blog which is a free wordpress blog, I totally agree with you. While this blog is solely for link building and nothing much else, I agree it’s pretty restrictive in terms of SEO and how much you can do to improve the look and feel. I especially missed all those great plugins I have in my own self-hosted blog along with a host of all other things. BTW I’ve updated your blog to PR3 in my PR list.

Peter´s Last blog post..How To Increase Blog Traffic? Use This Simple Technique
Thanks for that Peter, whilst I have a blogger blog I’ve never used the free WordPress blog although I have heard from other people that it had many limitations.
Great stuff, Sire, and of course you’re right. There’s absolutely nothing better than hosting your own blog, as it allows flexibility and customization you can’t get elsewhere.
Mitch´s Last blog post..What Would You Buy?
Yep, that’s what I’ve been saying all along Mitch and you don’t actually see the advantages until you try it for yourself.
1. Being in the top 5 of Google means you have your SEO down…it has absolutely nothing to do with money. Otherwise all SEO geeks would be marketing kingpins…I promise you their not lol and vice verse.
2. One of the two is owned by Grizzly, a very well known MMO blogger who also owns self hosted blogs and works them together quite nicely.
Dennis Edell´s Last blog post..Best Blog Review Winners!
Thanks Dennis, you are a wealth of information. Obviously I knew all of that, I just didn’t know how to put it into words. :flush_tb:
“Obviously” is debatable at best ;)
Actually it was in response to Frank, not you. :)
Dennis Edell´s Last blog post..Best Blog Review Winners!
Yeah, I knew that
I begin my blog posts with … “This Is a Sponsored Post” … I know Google may slap me but I respect the intelligence of my visitors.
Got a PR of 3 in this update. Aiming for 5 in the next one.
Jhangora´s Last blog post..Why Is The Night Sky Dark? Olbers’ Paradox
That’s good Jhangora as a reader is very important to a blog, because a blog without readers is like a man without purpose.
I have heard people complaining that Google is not indexing their WordPress free blogs. I do not know why, I just see several talking about it. Could be that Google is tired of them having so many spam blogs or they may want to push up their blogger blogs. Or it could simply be a goof up.
Sheryl Loch´s Last blog post..Nascar 2009 is On!
I suppose it’s the same reasons that the paid to post sites do. Obviously the advertisers don’t want to have anything to do with them, perhaps it’s some look less than professional, or they are worried that the bloggers will fade away as they are not as committed as those who go through the trouble of hosting their own blog.
It’s a daunting task to setup a new site for the first time, but definitely worth it in the long run.
Susan´s Last blog post..Nature Theme
I thought so at first Susan, but once you ftp WordPress to it’s new location the installation is very simple. Some hosts will even do it for you or have a self installation process.
Hi Sire, there have been a few troubling signs from hosted solutions this week with Google pulling content and WordPress altering it without users consent. Which is just one more great reason to host your own content.
That is a great post Christopher, so much so that I stumbled it. I hope that others appreciate it as much as I did. I knew it was only a matter of time before something like this could happen.
With it being so cheap why people choose not to is beyond me. To start out it’s ok but if you want to be serious you need to self.
The Blogger Source´s Last blog post..What Time Should You Post?
It does make you wonder why more people do not host their own sites doesn’t it. Especially when some hosts make it so easy.
Hosting your own \blog on a reliable web hosting provider has many advantages and very few drawbacks. If you are not experienced with blog platforms installation, don’t want to update it with the latest patch and security releases which comes out, then you have to register for a hosted blog (i.e. wordpress.com). On the other hand having your blog on a shared web hosting account gives you the possibility to install whatever tool or extension you want, apply search engine optimization to your blogs installment, and you are able to use much more resources (diskspace and bandwidth) than those that come with free blog services. The final decision is your.
That’s true John, and their are even Hosts that will install and maintain blogs, as far as upgrades go for you. The thing is this isn’t really necessary and WordPress has it’s own automatic upgrade facility.
The cPanel script Fantistico makes it easy to install your first WordPress blog on your own host. Like you said Sire, the latest few versions of WP have their own upgrade facility. You just have to mark one or 2 folders as writeable to get it to work. It’s worth the effort to get your own stand alone blog running.
.-= AllInTitle´s last blog ..A New Era for Search =-.
Even though I have the facility with my host I’ve never bothered with Fantastico, but I reckon that there may be some who would like to make use of the cPanel feature. Thanks for bringing that up.
