The Products You Can Promote On Your Blogs

Out of all the emails I get from my readers the one question that comes up the most is a variation of the following; “Sire, everywhere I go I read that if I want to make money on my blog I really need a product of my own to promote. The problem is I don’t have one and so I really need some advice as to what products I actually can promote.”

Naturally, all the emails were different but that quote portrays the general gist of the emails. Its safe to say that this problem is one that many bloggers struggle with and it is in fact one that I struggled with for a few years myself. The obvious reason is that bloggers, like myself, don’t have our own product to promote and probably never will have. That being the case we join sites like Commission Junction, Clickbank and the like to promote their products by placing links in our post or somewhere else on our blogs. They may get the occasional click but rarely generate a sale and the main reason for this is because there’s usually no relation between the product and what we’re writing about. Even when there is there’s nothing to substantiate our reference to the product unless we’ve shown in some way that we’re actually using the product in question.

Of Good Hosts And Bad Hosts, Beware The Bad Hosts

Over a year ago I wrote a post about how I moved this blog from one host to another. That post was called WassupBlog Alive And Kicking After Transferring to BlueHost. If you’re looking for a good host you can’t go past BlueHost and their CPU Throttling would have to be one of their best features.

Over a year later it’s happened to that host again. The first time it happened I thought it wasn’t really the host’s fault, it was just that Wassup had outgrown it, especially as I had three other blogs hosted under the one domain. Let that be a warning to people, although many hosting packages give you unlimited domains you have to remember the more domains you have on the same host the more strain you’re putting on your CPU and the more likely you’ll get your account suspended. Once I moved WassupBlog I left behind three other blogs, my Scenic Adelaide, Photos2Blog and my Load Of Bullshit blog.

I left those blogs there because it was an Aussie host and I wanted to support an Australian company. It turns out that was a big mistake. I woke up one morning to find that my account was suspended yet again. The turkeys at HostSmart, yeah I’m naming them as others should know what to expect from this host, didn’t take the time to find out which blog was causing the problem and suspending that blog, nope, they suspended the whole account. I couldn’t even access my CPanel or use my FTP program to access my blogs to check things out. Shit, I couldn’t even receive emails linked to those accounts.

No damn support. No phone numbers listed on the site. I finally found a phone number but do you think anyone would answer it? I left a support ticket and when I got a reply some 24 hours later it was to say that my account was suspended due to it was overloading the server and it wouldn’t be restored until I confirmed I would do something about it.

There was so many things that could have been done that they failed to do and in the end they’ve lost me as a customer. Not only that but I will no longer be sending people to them, an average of some 200 – 300 per month! What a waste that proved to be, they couldn’t even convert one of them. Perhaps those people were just smarter than I was.

Once I got access I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. While I was waiting to get access I searched the web for another host as I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket by using the same host. I settled on HostGator as they seemed to have a great reputation. Once access was restored I started moving everything over and it all went through without a hitch. As it turns out HostGator has a 24hr Live Chat which I used a few times, both before and during the transfer, so that I could clear up a few things. Every time I used it they were quick to respond and they were able to answer all my queries. Now that is what I call service, something my previous host knew nothing about.

Here are some tips for those looking for good Web Host.

Ask other bloggers who they use and what they think of them.
Check the forums, most good hosts have them, to see what the reaction from members are. Do they resolve problems quickly?
Check to see that they a phone number so that you can contact them quickly in an emergency. Leaving a support ticket is OK but can be time consuming.
Do they have Live Chat available? I’ve found this to be an indispensable feature and both BlueHost and HostGator have it.

Mitch, if you’re reading this post, yes you did warn me about staying with them, and yes as it turns out I should have listened to you. Again. Let that be a lesson to me huh?

BlueHost, CPU Throttling And Dedicated Server Packages

It’s been close to three weeks since moving WassupBlog to BlueHost, and so far I am very happy with the move. The original reason for the move was because my last host suspended my account because my CPU usage was above the allowed amount for shared hosting.

This isn’t the first time it’s happened to me, as my post Of Web Hosts And Blogger Friends describes how LunarPages handled the very same situation. The problem seems to be with the shared hosting package that most bloggers, including myself, go for, as it is by far the cheapest way to host your blog.

I think it is safe to say that most of the time a shared hosting environment is all that the average blogger will ever need, and they may never have their blog suspended or banned by their host because of excessive CPU usage. Then again, you never know when one of your posts may go viral, or when you may cross the line by adding one too many plugins, or by installing a poorly written script, any one of which may cause your CPU usage to spike to such an extent that causes your blog’s suspension.

You may want to check with your host to see what their policy is in regards to this situation. I’ve found that this blog’s host, BlueHost, has a very unique way of handling this problem. They have incorporated what is known as CPU Throttling, so instead of your site going offline due to excessive CPU isage, it merely slows down to lower the amount of CPU being used. As you can appreciate, it’s a whole lot better to use this method to deal with the occasional spike in CPU, causing your blog to slow down for awhile, rather than having it shut down altogether.

This is all great stuff, but there may come a day when your blog outgrows your shared hosting package, and you will need to move over to a dedicated server, which is a single web server within a network of computers, dedicated solely to one customer. Once hosted on a dedicated server you no longer need to worry about other sites causing your site to slow down.

The reason that most people do not go this route is because of the added cost. I have had look around and managed to come up with several low costing packages that may suit the small business blogger who want go straight to the better package rather than go through the stress and hardship of moving over when things pick up.

At the moment I am quite content with the way things are going with my shared host packages, but there may well come a day when I outgrow them, and when that day comes I reckon I will will be considering on of the above packages.

The Advantages Of Hosting Your Own Blog

I have always been an advocate of hosting your own blog or website and there are many reasons for using the services of a decent webhosting package.

Probably the most important is the fact that it allows you to pick your very own domain, one that is most suited to your product or service and one that allows the best SEO advantages and is well suited for the many marketing techniques.
It shows that you are serious about your blog or website. How professional do you think it looks to an advertiser or prospective client when they see that you have opted for one of the many free services.
Individuality, is also an important point as by hosting your very own site, not only do you have your very own domain that you can proudly promote to the world, it also allows you countless more ways to individualize your site or blog.
Another important point, one that strives with point #1 for dominance is that it gives you security and complete control. Security in that you don’t have to worry about your ‘free’ site suddenly going missing, causing you to lose everything that you put into it. Control in that you don’t have to worry about your writing style or of offending someone. I know of people who blog on community sites who have had their blogs terminated because someone didn’t agree with what they had to say.
SEO, is another good point as it allows you greater control to apply some of the many SEO techniques available, more than if you decided to go for some of those free packages.
You also get to keep all the revenue generated from your blog. With those free sites you only get to keep a portion and most of the time you don’t actually get to see any of it.
Many a web host will also offer you incentives for joining, anything from a free domain for life to free templates for your up and coming website.
The ability to earn more income. I can safely say, as a blogger who has used both forms of blogs, free and self hosted, that I’ve made way more money on those blogs I host on my won domain. Most webhosts also have an affiliate program and how much easier is it to promote something that you are completely happy with than something that you have never tried. The money I have earned from promoting my hosts have more than paid for the hosting cost itself.
The benefit of adding subdomains is also a great plus as this allows you to expand your site and earning capacity
There are many more advantages for hosting your own blog or website and I have decided to leave no.10 open so that you my devoted readers and commentators can add their own reasons to my Top 10.

In case some of you are not sure which is the best package for you there are many sites on the net that rate individual hosts and it is always a good idea to see how other people have rated webhosting sites. This may give you more insite as to which package may suit you.
