Google +1 Showing Others Their Stamp Of Approval

Have you heard of Google’s latest internet invention, something very similar to FaceBooks Like button? Well, don’t be surprised if you haven’t because it only went live on the 1st. of June. I’m talking about Google’s +1 button, pronounced ‘plus one’. By displaying the +1 button on your site you allow your visitors the opportunity you give your site their stamp of approval. This is no different from them Tweeting your post or clicking on any of the other social media buttons that you’re displaying on it, except for one major difference, but before we get into that I’ll let Google introduce their +1 button.

Pretty cool huh? Now to the major difference, by placing the button on your blog you’re not only showing people who visit your blog how popular it is, it also shows up on Google’s search page.

As you can see the search results shows everyone how many people like your site. How cool is that? Whereas before a crappy site can be just in front of you because they’re better at SEO than you are, you can show others that yours is actually better simply because you have more plusses on yours. I’m sure it will also show Google this, which I’m sure will affect the SERPS as they continue to collect the data.

Can anyone use this new feature? Nope, you need a public Google profile so if someone who hasn’t got one clicks on the +1 icon they will get directed to Googles sign on page. Hopefully they liked it enough to join. Naturally there will be people who will try to game the system but I wouldn’t try it, because Google being Google I’m sure they’ve worked out a method to catch out cheats and I’m sure they will make them pay for their despicable efforts.

So how do you place the +1 icon on your blog? Simple, you go to your dashboard and use the ‘add new’ link in the plugins menu, enter Google +1 and install it. Once installed it will display it at the end of the post. I went one further though, I got the code from Google’s +1 page and I entered it in a widget in my sidebar. Not only does this give people another opportunity to give my blog a +1, it shows the value of whatever page their on. Now that is what I call really cool.

Did you like this post? Cool, the you know what to do, hit that +1!

You probably noticed from that image that the search results points to my online lottery ticket blog. In just over a week I am now on page three of Google which shows that the tactics I outlined in my last post is working.

To Tweet Or Not To Tweet, That Is The Question?

There was a post that I wrote some time ago where told of my experience with Shakespeare and it culminated in a Shakespearean style piece which I called To Blog Or Not To Blog, That Is The Question? Although my poetry and other creative posts don’t always fare that well I persist with them because I find they push my creativity and I enjoy that immensely. Not only the challenge of coming up with something different from the norm but the immense satisfaction of sitting back and admiring my work after its completion.

Another reason for doing something a little different is because there are already so many posts out there covering this topic I thought it best to be a bit more creative.

Colorful Trees

To tweet or not to tweet, a question asked by many
Tom, Dick and Harry or even Mary, Kristi and Jenny
They may all be wondering whether to tweet or not
What they should be asking; Is it worth a shot?

Your Twitter rep is important, so keep it in mind
Do not tweet crap for fear of leaving it behind
Only tweet works, that you find are worth the tweet
For then your twitter rep, in time will become elite

What of self promotion, is that not a good excuse
To give a blog a tweet so that you also get some juice?
But that will only work if a great comment you’ll leave
A comment that adds value that readers will receive

Some will tweet to line their pockets with money
But if you do too many, others won’t think you funny
Your tweets must be interesting, that others will enjoy
Just keep in mind it’s a social tool and not a ruddy toy

To put it in a nut shell you should tweet posts but rather than just tweet and run off you should also take the time to leave a great comment, especially if you can leave one that stands out from the rest. Tweeting a great post which you have made better by leaving a great comment will give both you and the blogger exposure.

Blogging! Why The Hell Do We Do It?

Have you ever asked yourself why we take the time to write in our blogs? Let’s not fool ourselves because we all know that maintaining an active blog takes time, a lot of time, and effort. It’s not all about the research needed to write the post, or even working out the SEO, unless you’re using Market Samurai. No, blogging also involves marketing, hitting the social media networks and commenting on as many blogs possible.

Those who have been blogging for awhile know fully well how much time and effort goes into it. While many have given up because they’ve found it was a lot harder than what they were made to believe, from all those get rich quick stories, many still soldier on.

  • So, do we do it for the money? Ha! How many of us are actually making enough that it covers all the time we’re putting into it?
  • Maybe we’re doing it for the fame? So how’s that working for you, are you getting noticed yet?

Well, don’t sweat it because we’re all in the same boat and most of the people who tell you they’re not are lying to you. So why the hell are we such dedicated bloggers? Could it be that we love it? Yeah, that could be it because blogging isn’t all hard work, there’s also the thrill we get when someone links to our post or gives it a Tweet. And let’s not forget how great it feels when someone comments on our post and we get a real conversation going. Yeah, the interaction that comes with blogging is pretty cool.

But I reckon the best ever feeling is the moment just after you click submit. You’ve read through it looking for mistakes and everything looks perfect so you click submit and when it’s finally published it hits you. If I was looking for an analogy I reckon the closest one would be comparing it to when you’re dying for a leak but there’s nowhere to relieve yourself and so you hang on and hang on until you see it! A restroom! So you rush in knowing that at any moment you’re going to wet your pants. You run up to the urinal, ladies in your case you’d be rushing to the loo, fumbling to get your fly undone. You whip out your member and let it rip. Ahhhh, the sweet sensation of relief floods over you and for a moment you’re thinking that the sensation is almost as good as having sex. No, really? Shit, must be just me then.

Pleasure series

So the post hits cyberspace, I’ve had my first cosmic orgasm but I haven’t got time to just sit back and with for the euphoria to dissipate. Nope, if I want the next rush to happen, the one I mentioned earlier that involves getting tweeted and commented on, I need to get my ass into gear. Time to hit the social networks and promote the heck out of the post. Time to also hop onto as many blogs and leave a comment so that I can get some backlinks, oh and I best make sure their killer comments so that it may generate some traffic. Let’s not forget to send an email to my growing list too and while I’m at it why not ask them to give the post a Tweet just to generate a little more interest. Yeah that should about cover it. What? I should do something else? Well, just don’t sit there gawking at your monitor like stuffed mullets, tell me what the heck else I should do?

Why I Chose MailChimp Over Aweber

Now you’ve all heard about Aweber and how it’s supposed to be the bees knees of auto-responders? Well I decided against it because I just couldn’t see the value in it. These guys are so up themselves they won’t even offer a free trial! Instead you have to pay $1 to sign up for the first month and after that the cheapest rate is $19/month and if you have more than 500 subscribers you can expect to pay a lot more, up to $149/month. No wonder people using them have to keep shoving stuff down your throat, if they don’t they’d be losing money.

I sampled several auto-responders, more about them in a future post, and once I was through trialing them I decided that my list would be powered by MailChimp. As long as you don’t have more than 1000 subscribers and you don’t send more than 6000 emails a month your account is absolutely free. That knocks Aweber completely out of the ball park as far as trials goes.

What I love most about MailChimp is that you still get so much even though it’s a free account. I’ve actually had list members compliment me on the quality of my ‘newsletters’ and it’s all so easy to do because they have a large collections of templates that you can use to design absolutely stunning campaigns. You can even design your own templates.

There are so many features available to you with a free account, some of which include;

  • Multiple Lists: If you want to run more than one campaign targeting different lists then you’ll be happy to know you can do this with MailChimp
  • Good Reporting Features: There are so many reports you can keep track of. You can see who opened the mail, who clicked on what links. Whether or not any got bounced. Who’s unsubscribed. You can even connect it to Google Analytic and check whether a particular campaign has increased your traffic.
  • Connect With Twitter: Not only can you send your campaign to your lists, you can also send it out as a Tweet or via other social networks including FaceBook, Digg, Delicious, Buzz and MySpace. This is a Tweet of my last campaign.
  • Video Tutorials: I love the fact that they have video tutorials that help you to get the most from their site.

As far as I’m concerned these guys offer me all that I need to run a campaign and it’s all for free! If I ever grow my list to the extent that I need to pay for their service then I’m more than happy to do that.

Email Marketing Best PracticesThere was one point that was brought up by Ben Wan who mentioned that their TOS didn’t allow the use of affiliate links in the campaigns. This didn’t bother me all that much as my list was more for informing my subscribers of new posts than it was for promoting affiliates. Still, I could see how this would be important   for others so I decided to email support.

I spoke to a bloke called Edwin and I asked straight out about affiliate links and their TOS. This was his reply.

Hello Peter,

It’s nice to virtually meet you.

In the general sense we can only support affiliate content that is being sent to a list that is current and has been collected through a double optin process.  Also affiliate content can compliment newsletter content but can not be the entire focus of a message itself.

We would have to see an example of your newsletter to be able to say for sure if we could support it or not.

Feel free to email us back if you have specific questions or comments beyond this that we can assist you with.

Regards,
Edwin
MailChimp.com / Client Services

Well, I thought that was entirely reasonable. It’s obvious these guys are as much anti spam as I am, and let’s face it most of those guys that have lists send out so much crap it may as well be spam. These guys want to make sure people don’t give their product a bad name and I can understand that. Anyway, I purposefully put in an affiliate link into the next campaign and emailed him a copy.

He got back to me the next day saying that the example was fine but warning that the word “affiliate” in the content could have some spam filtering issues.  No worries then, that means I had absolutely no reason for not using MailChimp, I could even use affiliates in my campaign as long as I wasn’t a complete ass about it.

So, have you joined my list yet? If not you really should. As a member you will be listed on the My List page. You will never miss out on a post again. I will always try to include a link or two to other members blogs so that they also benefit from my campaigns. As a subscriber you may even learn a thing or two about what makes Sire tick, something that others will not be privy to. :wink_ee:

Twitters is a powerful social media site. It allows you to connect to a wide range of people but yet a lot of people are dissatisfied with it. There could be many reason for this. To get the most out of Twitter you really need to be following those who are like minded. Those who are interested in the same things that you are because you will find it a lot easier conversing, conversationally and profitably, with people who are of the same opinions as yourself.
