DoFollow NoFollow War Compared To The Toilet Seat Saga

What’s that, you don’t know what the toilet seat saga is referring to? :doh_tb: What planet are you from, Venus or perhaps it’s Mars. :laugh_tb: Well, for as long as I can remember there have been arguments between men and women as to which is the natural position for the toilet seat, is it up or is it down?

Most women will say that it’s down, not surprising as that saves them the hassle of putting it down if it’s currently in the up position. Men on the other hand don’t particularly care, if it’s down those who love their wives lift it up rather than having to rely on their aim. If they remember they will place it in the down position but normally they just wander off in search of another beer. This could result in having to put up with their wife screaming at them because they failed to check before sitting down. Honestly ladies, you just have to be more observant. :devil_tb:

You’re probably wandering what all this had to do with dofollow and nofollow? It only just came to me today during a conversation with Mitch via the comments on my post about the Ttoilet seats natural poitionop 5 Reasons That People Aren’t Advertising On Your Blog. Most people who do not want to piss Google off do not do paid ads and if they do they insist on using the nofollow attribute. Even the guys who developed WordPress built it into the code so that all links showed up as nofollow in the comment section.

To me the question is what is the natural attribute on a link, is it dofollow or is it nofollow? Unlike the toilet seat saga I believe that there is a definitive answer and that is it’s obviously  DOFOLLOW? Think about it, whenever you link to a site it is automatically a DOFOLLOW link, you have to physically add the NOFOLLOW attribute to make it do something that is unnatural to it’s true being.

So, who do we blame all this confusion about what form of link one should be using? Ultimately it’s all Google’s fault, Google and the other search engines. Originally it was touted as being the savior for all the comment spam that was hitting the blogs but I personally feel it goes deeper than that. Later on we’re told that it was interfering with Google’s algorithms and how they wanted to represent a ‘purer’ search results to their users. One can only wander if that’s the absolute truth or if there is an anterior motive?

So when you are deciding which path to take when choosing between the two types of link think about the link itself and how it must feel when you force it to do something it’s not designed to do.

Interview With Maddy Cuttsworth Over PR Update

How fortunate was I to have run into Maddy Cuttsworth, one of Google’s big boys, and to have him agree to an interview. How lucky are you, my loyal readers, to have access to this exclusive interview with one of the most famous faces behind the huge Google machine.

Naturally, once I got him on his own I wanted to grill him, to learn as much as I could about what Google sees as important as far as PR updates are concerned.

Exclusive Interview With Maddy Cuttsworth

Sire:  First let me welcome you to WassupBlog, I’m sure my readers are waiting with baited breath to learn all that they can from you Maddy.  Before we start, how’s the cappuccino? Does the fact it’s laced with truth serum affecting the taste at all?

Maddy: Truth serum?

Sire:  Never mind that Maddy, let’s get on with the interview shall we? I’m sure my readers would like to know what Google considers important when handing out it’s PR. Take dofollow vs nofollow, for example, is it true that Google would penalize dofollow blogs.

Maddy: Nope, sure Google would like people to believe that Google would frown on dofollow blogs as it upsets the figures collected by our bots, but it’s all too hard to monitor so we don’t bother with it. It’s enough that we spread the rumors that it could harm their ranking and then we let bloggers willing to spread the rumor run with it.

Sire: So, are you saying that when I posted The Myth That Dofollow Leaches Your PR,  I the nail right on the head?

Maddy: (frowning) Yeah, we weren’t at all happy when we saw that.

Sire:  OK. Most people would agree that a blog’s PR should reflect the quality of the content as well as the popularity of the blog itself. Would you agree with that?

Maddy: Yes, of course.

Sire: Well then, can you tell me why my What A Load Of Bullshit blog has never gone above PR0, especially considering it is both popular and has good content?

Maddy: It’s because of the name of the blog. Google does not like profanity.

Sire: So you’re saying it’s because Google does not like the word bullshit. Don’t you realize that bullshit is NOT a dirty word? So you’re trying to tell me if the site was called What A Load Of Cow Manure, it would have a better PR even though the former name would be more accurate?

Maddy: Well yes.

Sire: Seems to me that Google is a bit up itself, but let’s move on shall we? I and a lot of others have noticed that the A Listers of the world tend to have a higher PR even though their blog posts are no better than many of the other bloggers out there. Why is that?

Maddy: I think I can safely say it’s because they do all the right things to make Google happy.

Sire: Oh, so it’s not all about content, it’s just that they are so far up Google’s ass that Google rewards them. Seems a little biased wouldn’t you say?

Maddy: Well yes, but how else can we get people to conform to what we want?

Sire: So Google is more into conformity than it is about quality? Now, let’s tackle those bloggers who have been Google Slapped because they decided to do paid tasks or accept paid links on their blogs. Why is that?

Maddy: Well, it upsets our statistics so we let it be known that we don’t like it.

Sire: So it has nothing to do with the fact that it also affects your bottom line?

Maddy: Yes, that too.

Sire: So once again PR is more than just ranking a site on quality it’s also about making sure they once again conform to Google’s rules.

Maddy: Why am I all tied up, and who the hell are you?

Sire: Oops, looks like you’re all out of cappuccino there Maddy. Reckon that concludes our little interview. Thanks so much for being part of Wassup for today.

The Myth That DoFollow Leaches Your PR

I’ve been a blogger for quite some time now and I’ve read a lot of posts from other bloggers in regards to why your blog should keep the nofollow attribute in the comments section. The main one being that if you were to change your blog to a dofollow blog it would harm your Page Rank (PR).

The main reason given for this is that Google, the great instigator of PR, would only approve of relevant links and therefore all irrelevant links should have the nofollow attribute attached to it so as not to waste Google’s minions, the SpiderBots, time by following useless links.

The myth is that in order to stop people using links in comments Google would leach PR from the hosting site. This naturally scared the pants off some bloggers who immediately ran around in a mindless panic making their blogs nofollow and checking individual links in their posts to see whether or not they should also be made nofollow.

[eminimall]

I am happy to say that I am not one of those bloggers who panicked, and my blog has remained, and will always remain, a dofollow blog. Why? Because I want to reward those who take the time to leave constructive comments on my blog.

What’s that? What of Google and my PR? Well, honestly I have always stated that PR was never really important to me, although I will try to make good use of it while I have it.

As to the myth that dofollow leaches your PR, all I can say is that I went from a PR3 to a PR4 and that either means that the myth is false or I’m such a fantastic blogger that even with all the PR juice that is leaked from this blog through my highly valued comments, I still managed to raise my Page Ranking.
