Why You’re Not Getting Sales On Your Blog

I’ve often wondered about this and I’ve even tried to compare blogs to real word businesses in order to find an answer. Let’s consider a couple of real world businesses to see where some differences may lie. The first one that comes to mind, probably because I’ve been associated with this type of business for most of my life, is the supermarket or corner deli. As long as their premises are neat, tidy and welcoming and their staffs attitude is professional and friendly they’re likely to convert almost every person that comes into their store into sales. The main reason for this is people who come into this type of store are looking for something that they need then and there.

Now lets look at a store that sells TV’s, Hi-Fi systems and the like. They may find it a little harder to convert because not everyone that walks into their store is ready to buy a product then and there. Many are window shopping or even looking for the right product at the right price. However, it is possible to convert these casual shoppers as long as you have the properly trained staff. Staff that are able to approach the prospects without scaring them off. Who are able to get out of the prospects what it is they are looking for and then convince them that they are not only able to offer the best deal but the best after sales service as well. Done correctly, even if the prospect leaves the store many will come back, especially if they do not receive the same service elsewhere, to complete the sale. I know this to be a fact because it’s happened many times while I was working in such a store.

Knowing Who Your Customers Are

In the above examples, as in other such businesses in the real world, they have the advantage in that people walking into their stores know what they’re selling and more importantly are probably wanting to buy something from them, if not now at a later date. This is generally not the case for our blog visitors, especially if the blogger has been using the wrong keywords to attract prospective customers.

Are You Using The Wrong Keywords?

This is something every good blogger must ask themselves. How often have you left in disgust because you landed on a site that had absolutely nothing to do with what you were searching for. While some may blame Google for it the problem usually lies with

Keywords are Important!

the site owner for using the wrong keywords. Their mistake was all they were interested in was traffic rather than getting a lower amount of targeted traffic which has more chance of converting. While traffic may be good for lowering your Alexa ranking its pretty useless unless the people who land on your site are actually looking for the products you have on offer. Traffic that isn’t targeted can be likened to customers who rush into a store just to get out of the rain. They may look around while there but they’re not likely to buy anything and once the rain stops they will continue their journey to the store which has what they’re looking for and are therefore more likely to make a sale.

I have to admit that before Market Samurai I never used to worry about keywords because it was all to hard and I know now what a great mistake that was. It’s better to do some keyword research than to not worry about it at all because otherwise you’re not getting the right traffic reducing any chance at converting traffic into sales.

Knowing Your Audience

An important question to ask yourself is who exactly is reading your blog. This is

Preaching to the wrong audience is like talking to the wind. It’s a waste of breath!

because if you know who your readers are then you have more of a chance at selecting the right products to sell to them. The real reason many bloggers are failing when it comes to marketing is because they’re pushing the wrong products to the wrong people.

Say for example you know that your audience consist mainly of teenagers then you would want to provide products that would interest them. This could be anything from ways of treating acne to the latest iPhone. Find the right products and then you’re finally on a winner.

Take this blog for example, it’s not a niche blog and yet it still provides me an income. Most of my readers are bloggers and therefore most of my money comes from selling blogging related products. My biggest seller to date has been the FlexSqueeze theme and other products include the plugins like CommentLuv Premium and even Andy’s latest IM Graphics plugin. The reason for my success with these two plugins is getting in early and being able to offer them at a discounted price. I’m sure that those who purchased the plugins from me in the early days also offered it to their readers thereby recouping their costs and perhaps even making a profit.

Just so you know those images you see in this post are all thanks to Andy’s latest updates to his IM Graphics plugin and if you act quickly you may still get it at the introductory price. My last post not only explains how it works it also shows you.

So, if you can find out who your audience is you will have a better idea at what products you can market to them Having a niche blog makes the job a lot easier but niche blogs can be boring resulting in poor posts and therefore poor conversions.

The question for many of us is how do you work out who your audience is? The obvious answer is by interacting with your commentators. I’m afraid that alone may not be enough and so I ask you, my loyal and knowledgable readers, how to we learn what category or people are reading our blogs so we can successfully market to them?

Why Zaparena Is No More

Do you guys remember my first ever post on Zaparena called Put Money In Your Pocket And Generate Traffic To Your Blog!? Well, that was the first of many posts promoting a site that I believed actually worked, one that not only generated traffic to your blog but also put a bit of money in your pocket. There were those who said Google would penalise sites who used it and I proved them wrong. There were those who didn’t like the scantily clad women portrayed in their ads and I explained to them that you didn’t have to have those ads if you didn’t want them and I chose to have them because I happen to like scantily clad women? :lol_ee:

Can You Make Money With Zapunited?

Well, as you can probably tell those ads no longer reside on this blog and let me tell you that is not by choice. What used to be Zaparena is now Zapunited and anyone still displaying Zaparena ads they now link to the zapunited site. Note to self, remove all Zaparena ads from my blogs. I displayed the Zapunited ads in place of the Zaparena ones to see how well they perform. When I noticed they were only generating a minimal amount per click I emailed them.

I explained how I have advertisers who pay me $30 a month to display a banner on this blog and asked what I could expect from their advertisers. I received an answer saying that I would earn more if I displayed the ads under a post. Somehow I think they missed my point because I wasn’t enquiring on how much they would generate per click I wanted to know what it was worth for them to display their ads on this blog. As you can see from this image there is one ad spot available

earn money with zap united?

On this blog when there is an empty spot like that someone would fill it by paying me thirty bucks a month. I assume that someone will be getting some cash when that spot is filled but it’s not me unless someone clicks on that ad. I’m not sure I’m happy with that unless it generates well over a dollar a click and I get over a hundred clicks, combined, a month. Anything less and that and as far as I’m concerned it’s simply not viable to display their ads.

I know some of you out there are saying that Zaparena didn’t pay that much for their ads but then you’re forgetting the main reason I displayed their ads is because they generated targeted traffic to my blogs. There is no such advantage having zapunited ads and so they have to pay their way.

I reckon I will give them a months trial to see how they work out. Once the month is up you can expect another post updating you on the results and on my decisions as to whether or not they will have a place on this blog.

As a regular reader I just have to know, do you miss seeing all those near naked women. :lol_ee: As to whether or not you can make money with zapunited, only time will tell.

Update On Buy Online Lottery Tickets

As it’s been just under three months since the birth of Buy Online Lottery Tickets I thought it would be a good time to do an update on how things are going. To date I’ve pretty well kept to the strategies outlined in my How I Am Marketing My Online Lottery Niche and I’m sure that those of you who have read that post would be interested in hearing how things are tracking so far.

Naturally an important part of any successful site is traffic and the cheapest way to get traffic to your site is to rank highly for your selected keywords. I used Market Samurai to help me choose the domain name buyonlinelottotickets.com so it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out what keywords I was aiming at….Buy Online Lotto Tickets :drunk_tb:  OK, let’s see how I’m ranking for these, and other closely related keywords.

SERPs For Buy Online Lotto Tickets

For those of you who don’t know, SERPS stands for Search Engine Results Page and getting a good result in the SERPs means getting on the first page the search engine results.

  • Buy Online Lotto Tickets: I still don’t rank for Google but I’m #1 on Yahoo and Bing
  • Buy Online Lottery Tickets: Again, zip for Google but #1 on Yahoo and Bing
  • Buy Lotto Tickets Online: Google is such an arse because they still won’t rank me :annoyed_tb: At least Bing and Yahoo are more generous as I’m #2 with them
  • Buy Lottery Tickets Online: Yeah, you guessed it, nothing on Google but #2 on Bing and Yahoo.

Sort of makes you wonder what Google’s problem is doesn’t it? :smile2_ee: What is really weird is although they don’t recognise it as far as SERPs go, they’ve see fit to grace it with a ranking of PR3! :lol_ee: Even some of the internal pages have received a PR1 ranking. That alone would make some bloggers a little green with envy. :sick_ee:

Analytic For Buy Online Lotto Tickets

Google Analytic

While it appears to have flatlined there for several days, that’s only because I forgot to transfer the Google Analytic code after updating the theme. Even so, you can still get a rough idea on how the site is tracking and while traffic is still relatively low it’s to be expected considering the age of the site.

As for the traffic sources, 33% have been sent from search engines, a number that will increase once it starts ranking highly in Google.

traffic source overview

The only thing left to tell you is how much income the site is actually producing. So far, it’s only made a couple of conversions but at least they are producing a small but steady income. I still have high hopes for the site and I’m sure that over time as I continue to grow my member base it  will provide me with a nice steady income.

When Will You People Get A Damn Gravatar

This post is very important so I want you to read it carefully and to pay very special attention because if you don’t you’re liable to do something wrong that will get your comment deleted. First off I want to ask you a quick question. Do you know why so many bloggers insist on an actual name and not a keyword? It’s quite simple really, because when they reply to the blogger they would prefer to know who the heck they are talking to. No-one really likes to say; “Hey Cheap Web Hosting, I really loved your comment because you added so much quality to my post……..” Nope, I wouldn’t put up with that, no matter how much grovelling you do, and neither would any decent respected blogger. If they have any sense at all they would do what I do and that is to delete your comment.

This post isn’t about using a keyword instead of your real name though, but it is about something just as important, it’s about taking the time to get a Gravatar. You know, that little photo that appears next to the comments that people leave. I’m getting a little tired getting comments that do not have a registered gravatar. In fact, I am so tired of them that I’m not going to accept any comment on this post that does not have a Gravatar!

Your Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums, so why not on any site?

In essence your Gravatar is your brand, that being the case it is just as important as using your name instead of a keyword, and seeing how its absolutely free why wouldn’t you register a Gravatar. Before you do though you may want to consider the following.

  • Even though you may have a company logo I personally suggest
you use an actual photo of yourself as this is more likely to get people to trust you. I used to use a random graphic that I thought was pretty cute but it wasn’t until Icleavage started using a personal photo that I actually started making sales.
  • Ladies, even if you are endowed with a great set of knockers, please include your face as well, because if all I have to look at is cleavage I doubt very much that I will notice your content, and it is your content you want people to notice isn’t it?
  • This one is the most important of all, by not having a Gravatar it’s highly likely that some of your comments may come across as spam and that is the last thing that you want to happen!

So why wouldn’t you consider getting a Gravatar, especially when its free and so easy to set up. All you need remember is when signing up is you need to use the same email that you use when blog commenting because it is linked to that email. That’s it folks, so if you haven’t got one yet you had better head on over to Gravatar and get one now.

Procrastination And How It Can Cost You Money

If you were to look procrastination up on dictionary.com, the first meaning is to defer action; delay: procrastinate until an opportunity is lost. This post is all about lost opportunities and how it can cost you money.

I know all about being ripped off, that’s why I started up my BS blog, to warn people about all the scams that are out there. I personally think that way too many people are overly cautious about being ripped off and that causes them to miss out on many opportunities. Opportunities that could be making them some extra income. I know this is true, and I’m sure many of you will agree with me, because there are so few readers who are willing to click on a link these days.

procrastination

Personally, I will try anything, especially if it’s free. After all, what could it cost me except a little time. Once I’ve tried a product or a service I will then write a post telling others of my experience. In essence I’m doing all the leg work so that my readers don’t have to. If the trial is a good one I’ll say so and if the reverse is true then I’ll tell them that as well. I won’t give a positive review of a crappy product because it would ruin my credibility and as I stated in the post about why the Three Things Probloggers Have That We Don’t, credibility is a very important factor.

So, I have to ask myself, why aren’t people clicking on those links?

  • My credibility still sucks
  • It’s all too hard, because they’ve been clicking that mouse all day and one more is just too much bloody effort.
  • They’re scared that they’ll get sucked in to some scam or something
  • Not enough time to check it out, but they promise themselves they will come back later.
  • A fear of failure because it all seems too hard

Well, I sure do hope it’s not because my credibility sucks, because I’ve tried so hard to build it up over the years. There’s no reason of being scared, probably the number one reason for procrastination,  because I’m the one that’s put myself in harm’s way so that you don’t have to. If I can survive an experience then you will too, and if I’ve made money from it then there is every chance that you will too.

The not enough time aspect could also be a major cause, especially these days when everyone is so busy. So many people leave things for another day and then never get back to it. Once again, lost opportunities and if you think that lost opportunities aren’t costing you money, well let me tel you, you’re kidding yourself.

There’s also no need to be worried about being scared of taking something new on. That’s how we learn, and if it’s free why not give it a shot.

OK, I think this is a perfect opportunity for a poll

What Stops You From Clicking On A Link

In summary I would just like to say that clicking on a link won’t kill you, especially if it’s from a trustworthy site, and the failure of doing so could actually stop you from increasing your income, either directly, joining a new adsense alternative like Chango or indirectly from the use of software like Market Samurai.
