Why The The Struggle For PR Is A Waste Of Time

Before I go any further I would like everyone to know that I’m not all fussed about PR. My normal readers would know this but I am just stating it for those who happen to stumble upon this post. There’s a reason for this post, and that is because I believe there are a lot of bloggers out there whose efforts to improve their PR may actually be hampering their blogging efforts.

This could be because they may be stuffing their posts with keywords thereby cramping their writing style or in an effort to getting backlinks they resort to spamming other blogs, specifically those dofollow blogs and those wanting to reward their commentators by using such plugins as commentluv and keywordluv.

As far as PR is concerned I think it’s the following people who are most preoccupied with it.

  1. Bloggers and Webmasters who like to parade their ranking in front of everyone as symbol of their SEO prowess.
  2. Bloggers and Webmasters and Companies who pay others for links pointing to their sites, much to the disgust of Google.
  3. Paid To Review Sites who act as a medium between advertisers and those people selling links on their sites.
  4. SEO experts who amongst other things promote their capability to provide amongst other things a good PR and to have their site appearing on the first page of Google and other main search engines.

Honestly, it surprises me that the largest and most important group of people actually don’t give a stuff about PR. Come to think of it they probably don’t even know it exists let alone know the reasoning behind it all. I’m talking about your average  surfer who bounces from one blog/site to another completely oblivious to it’s PR.

So, if PR is supposed to display a site’s prominence in a particular field or service and the casual surfer has absolutely no idea as to it’s relevance or even existence one has to ask the question; Whats the bloody point of busting your gut trying to get a high PR when those important surfers, the one most likely to click on your adsense ads, haven’t got a clue as to what it is?

Google Finishes Off 2009 By Waving The PR Wand

It’s now 2010 in Aussieland and I’ve awaken to the new year to discover that the almighty Google has waved his magic wand once again and in all it’s misplaced wisdom he’s decided to downgrade some of my blogs, including this one.

WassupBlog is no longer a PR4! Nope it’s now a PR3 which makes no sense because since the last update Wassup’s popularity has increased by a sizable margin, so even though I wasn’t expecting to go up, nor did I expect to go down.

But, you know what? I don’t give a rat’s arse what PR Google decides to place on any of my blogs, because as far as I’m concerned PR is pretty well useless other than a measuring stick that is used to wave in front of advertisers to command a higher price.

Which reminds me, I’m gonna have to change my Advertise Here page. Hey guys, where are you all running off to? PR3 is still pretty good. Oh come on. :laugh_tb:

There is also another reason why I stopped caring about PR long ago, and that’s because I found it always placed pressure on me to improve my rankings. Once I worked out that pressure was cramping my blogging style I stopped worrying about PR and I’ve never looked back since. I started enjoying blogging again, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s what counts.

So, how did you guys all fare…..up, down or stayed as you were?

Wassup’s With The November’s Statistics

Ho, Ho, Ho….as we enter the festive month of December, it’s time to post November’s statistics. As I expected, it didn’t come anywhere near to October’s total of $193.22, but then I wasn’t at all surprised as it was unreasonable to think that Commission Junction would be able to pull out another magical sale from the magician’s hat.

Still, it wasn’t all that bad as Google was up nearly $9 which is roughly a 40% increase. Let’s have a look at the stats shall we.

TOTAL : $95.87

As you can see, while there were some poor performers, or even non performers, others maintained or even improved on previous results. E-Junkie has been the most consistent performer, other than Adsense, and it can be attributed to all those people who see the sense in having a professional theme such as FlexSqueeze.

What was really surprising was that about half of my Adsense earnings was attributed to this blog. Surprising because Wassup Blog is normally a poor performer. Good to see that it’s finally starting to pull a bit of it’s weight.

While search engines are very important to those who use them, they are just as important to those webmasters and bloggers who rely on them to bring visitors to their site. Knowing how they work can be very important when structuring websites or blogs.

Me, I can’t be bothered as it’s all too technical and would take all the enjoyment out of blogging. Still, having said that I found the following video extremely interesting. The video reviews the two most popular search engines, Google and Yahoo as well as the two newest search engines, Bing and Wolfram Alpha.

For those of you who actually watched the video, I know many in their excitement to leave a comment sometimes don’t actually watch the movie; shit some people don’t even read the post, but don’t worry, unlike Extreme John I’ll just delete your comment. :devil_tb:

Anyway, those of you who did watch the video you will know that very interesting comparisons are made between the search engines. It also explains why the same search term gives different results depending on the search engine used.

Something else I got out of it was a site called Blind Search, developed by a Microsoft employee for something to do in his spare time. What does the site do. In his words it is a ‘taste test’ and it works by entering a search term in the box. It will give you three different results, delivered in three columns, and all the branding has been stripped from the results. You then vote for the search engine that delivered, in your opinion, the best result, and it will then display the branding of the engines.

The goal of this site is simple, we want to see what happens when you remove the branding from search engines. How differently will you perceive the results?

Go ahead, give it a go. I’m sure you will find the results very interesting. Oh, don’t forget to Tweet this post if you found it of some interest.

The Myth That DoFollow Leaches Your PR

I’ve been a blogger for quite some time now and I’ve read a lot of posts from other bloggers in regards to why your blog should keep the nofollow attribute in the comments section. The main one being that if you were to change your blog to a dofollow blog it would harm your Page Rank (PR).

The main reason given for this is that Google, the great instigator of PR, would only approve of relevant links and therefore all irrelevant links should have the nofollow attribute attached to it so as not to waste Google’s minions, the SpiderBots, time by following useless links.

The myth is that in order to stop people using links in comments Google would leach PR from the hosting site. This naturally scared the pants off some bloggers who immediately ran around in a mindless panic making their blogs nofollow and checking individual links in their posts to see whether or not they should also be made nofollow.

I am happy to say that I am not one of those bloggers who panicked, and my blog has remained, and will always remain, a dofollow blog. Why? Because I want to reward those who take the time to leave constructive comments on my blog.

What’s that? What of Google and my PR? Well, honestly I have always stated that PR was never really important to me, although I will try to make good use of it while I have it.

As to the myth that dofollow leaches your PR, all I can say is that I went from a PR3 to a PR4 and that either means that the myth is false or I’m such a fantastic blogger that even with all the PR juice that is leaked from this blog through my highly valued comments, I still managed to raise my Page Ranking.
