Is It Ethical For Bloggers To Do Paid Posts?

Polls are great when you want to gauge how people feel about certain things. To date I’ve run 1o polls on this blog, the top two involved comments. The poll that got the most votes was Is Disqus Costing You Comments? with 162 people participating. This actually turned out to be a very popular post with 815 views and 140 comments. As it turns out 56% of people refrained from commenting on a Disqus blog, something you may want to consider if you run Disqus on your blog.

The second most popular poll with 107 votes was Will Commenting Harm Your Blogging Success? That also turned out to be a popular post attracting 109 comments. I wrote this post because someone tried to tell me that replying to comments on your blog was a harmful practice. I disagreed but rather than argue the point I put it to the vote and as it turns out I won with 89 people saying that interacting with your commentators was not harmful to your blogging success.

My last poll came about because I was trying to work out how often I should email a newsletter to my ~~list~~ subscribers and naturally the best way was to ask by way of a poll. This was the fourth most popular poll with 51 votes and the one that polled the highest with 43% of the votes was getting an email every time I wrote a post; once a well polled second with 37% and fortnightly came last with 20%.

Naturally as one poll ends another must take its place. I submitted one of my posts to Helium as it fit very nicely into the Bloggers Being Paid To Post: Is It Ethical? As I said in the article it’s always been a hot topic amongst bloggers. Many are dead against while others are for it. I thought it was about time I found out what my readers thought about it by running this poll.

The Results Are In! Disqus Does Cost You Comments

I did a post not all that long ago that’s turned out to be one of my top ten posts. I conducted a poll on that post in order to find out whether or not Disqus was actually stopping people from commenting on blogs. To date I’ve had 105 people vote. The question asked was Have You Refrained From Commenting Because It Was A Disqus Blog? to which 55 (52%) replied no and 50 (48%) replied yes.

I find that quite staggering. You can almost say that there is a 50/50 chance that people are not commenting on a Disqus blog. So, if you’re starved of comments at the moment and you’re running Disqus, then perhaps you should rethink your choice of commenting system.

Some like DiTesco commented that they voted no, not because he liked Disqus, but because,

there are too many blogs that I like and belong to friends that are Disqus powered and I am taking that extra mile to comment.

Unfortunately not everyone is willing to go that extra mile. There were a lot more comments that you may find interesting, both for and against, but when you consider those results I’m glad that I decided against Disqus and stuck with the one that comes with WordPress.

Is Disqus Costing You Comments?

Let’s face it, if you want more people commenting on your blog it sometimes takes more than a good post to get it out of them. AS s a blogger you want to make it as easy as possible for people to comment on your blog. Even though there are so many spam comments floating around many bloggers have decided not to use captchas, moderating comments manually, because they don’t want to present hurdles to their commentators.

I remember awhile back when Mitch wrote a post having a go at Disqus and other third party commenting systems, and then not so long ago reading a post comparing Commentluv with Disqus, although I don’t think you could call commentluv a commenting system, where the blogger is trying to work out which one to go for.

Personally I don’t like blogs using Disqus and it’s gotten so that I now finding myself scrolling down to see whether the blogger is using Disqus and if they are I don’t even bother reading the post. The only time I will comment on a Disqus blog these days is if I’m reciprocating a comment left on this blog.

I just don’t see the advantage to the commentator for having it installed and if it’s not making life easier for them then as far as I’m concerned it’s a waste of CPU.

Still, that’s just my opinion but I am really interested in what others have to say on the matter and so I’ve decided to run a little poll. It’s a simple yes or no answer but I would really love for you to leave a comment as to why you voted that way. I would also appreciate you Tweeting the post so as to get as many people involved in the poll as possible.
