Giving Your Blog That Christmas Feel

I would like to thank Rose for her post Christmas Holiday Themes For WordPress, as it motivated me into giving WassupBlog a Christmas theme. This would be my third theme modification, as I’ve already made one for Easter and Halloween. Naturally, the FlexSqueeze theme makes it all so easy that I actually look forward to playing around with it to blend it in with the holiday seasons.

The first thing I had to do was to find a suitable header. I finally decided to borrow one from another theme as I felt it set the right mood. Then I reduced the width of the blog so that it would display the Santa image that I chose for the background.

Adding An Image To Comment Box

I thought it would be pretty cool if I could jazz up the comment box a little by adding some snowflakes so I had a little look at the CSS file to see what I could do. For those of you who were wise enough to purchase the FlexSqueeze theme I thought you might like to know how I did it.

You will need to edit the ‘style.css’ file and I strongly urge you to make a backup before playing around with it.

First find the following lines;

#commentform input, #commentform textarea {
padding:5px;

Below that add the following;

background: url(images/bg-snowflakes5.gif);

Substitute ‘bg-snowflakes5.gif’ for whatever file you want to use as your background, remembering that the file has to be uploaded first in order for it to work. This is a cinch using the upload feature that comes with FlexSqueeze!  I suggest you use a very light colored file otherwise people will not be able to see what they are typing.

Adding An Image To Your Post Background

To add to the Christmas look of the blog I decided to change the background of the post area, and for this I chose a lovely snow scene. If you would like to do something similar to your blog then once again you will need to add a little bit of code to your ‘style.css’ file.

Find the following lines;

#content {
width:935px;
position:relative;
float:left;

Just below that enter the following line.

background: url(images/bg-snow-scene.jpg);

Once again substitute ‘bg-snow-scene.jpg’ by the image you’ve selected.

It is important to remember that these modifications to the ‘style.css’ file of this  theme will most likely not work on your theme. These modifications can still be done on most themes but you will have to find the right areas that need to be changed.

Apart from these style.css changes all other changes were done via FlexSqueeze‘s option page.  The images were all obtained from Free Web Images And Clipart , except for the header which I got from leadcamp.com.

Oh, one last thing. In case you are wondering how I got it to snow, it was by using the Let It Snow plugin.

EDIT: I’ve deactivated the plugin as I noticed it caused a bit of drain on the CPU, and possible made the blog somewhat slower. Even so, I reckon the blog may still remind people of Christmas.

As much as I would love to tell you guys how you should keep up with the latest web designs and on the importance of CSS for maintaining those good web designs, you all know that there is no way I could pull off such a post. Heck, if I knew that much about CSS and PHP I wouldn’t need to rely on a theme such as FlexSqueeze that does almost everything for me. Naturally, if you’re going to display any sort of theme, CSS or otherwise, you need to find a web hosting solution.

Still, being as how it is so important I was lucky enough to have been offered a guest post by Mary Ward who just happens to be a freelance author who writes about design job topics, such as how to choose among web design colleges, artist career tips, and more. Yeah, I know I’m waffling again, here’s the article.

As a web designer, you need to constantly find inspiration in order to be successful and to create work that is appealing and comprehensive. As with any other expression of art, it can sometimes be a task just to stay focused and find inspiration in everyday life. One aspect that is especially important to be focused with is Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

Within the industry of web design, CSS is a key building block to help you draw traffic to your website and ultimately get a higher page rank. Therefore learning the ins and outs and finding inspiration through CSS galleries is of the utmost importance as you move forward with your web design career. As a web designer, you really want to look to the CSS galleries as not only a source of inspiration, but also a way to keep up with new trends, practices, and creative ideas. The very best web designer must keep up with CSS galleries so that they are constantly fresh and using the trends to sharpen their own designs.

Having A Blog Test Site Is A Good Idea

I reckon if I was to ask whether or not you have ever had your blog go offline because you installed a plugin, or because you were playing around with the CSS or PHP codes, that the majority of you would say yes. The most important rule when doing any alterations to a blog is to always make sure you have a backup.

Luckily, ever since I changed my theme to FlexSqueeze I haven’t had much need to touch the internal coding at all. However, because the Theme is so easy to manipulate I have been toying with it to see some of the effects I could have. Some of you may remember the Easter Theme I ran a couple of weeks ago.

The thing is I didn’t want to bother my readers with all the different things I was trying as if figured it would freak them out if every time the page loaded they were confronted with something different, whether it was a different font color or perhaps a different header. I decided to use a Test Site to test the changes before adapting them to this blog. The site I used was Inquest, which was a blog that I originally set up for a young lady that went by the name Inquest. She was truly a remarkably talented blogger and I highly recommend they you have a look at some of her posts. Perhaps if you leave some comments we can coax her back. Anyway at the moment it is running the Easter Theme, but don’t be surprised if it isn’t as it is my Test Blog after all.

Once I was happy with the result the theme allows me to save it as a CSV file which I then import into this blog and all the changes I made gets instantly transferred, no worries or dramas at all.

While I was thinking about the whole procedure today I thought it be a great idea if all bloggers had their own test site. I mean, if you host your site it would be a cinch to set up a test blog. You could use this to test a new plugin or every time, for those of you who do not have the luxury of owning a FlexSqueeze theme, you decide to play around with the CSS or PHP codes. By having a test blog you are ensuring that your live blog does not get infected by any of your manipulations. Once you are happy with the way things are going you can then make the required adjustments to your actual blog.

Talking about themes, many of you may have heard of Thesis, especially if you are a regular reader and I have mentioned it a few times, but for those of you who haven’t, you may find Gromap’s post of some interest. IG, it’s author, has graciously mentioned me as a source for the negative viewpoint of Thesis, but I would like to point out that I never said it was shit or anything, just that it wasn’t as good or flexible as FlexSqueeze. Before you ask, yes if you buy FlexSqueeze from one of my posts I will make a bit of money from the sale but it will not add on any cost to you. You are merely supporting my life as a blogger so that I can keep a whole lot more informative and entertaining posts coming your way.
