Have You Been Getting Warnings From Avast?

Hey guys, just a quick note regarding those of you who are using Avast as your virus protection. Apparently some of you are getting warnings from Avast saying that this blog is compromised by some malaware or something. Specifically it points to a particular script that points to one of my websites. I might add that the offender is a very simple script and it definitely doesn’t have any malaware associated with it.

Still, why would you take my word for it, especially if you’ve come here out of the blue and don’t know who the hell I am. That being the case I thought it best to reveal the offending script Just to prove to you that it can’t possibly be infected with anything that could be setting off Avast’s alarm, so without further ado I want to show you the script that’s causing Avast to blow a fuse.

<a href=”http://coolbloglinks.com/”><img src=”http://coolbloglinks.com/button.php?u=Sire” alt=”Cool Blog Links” border=”0″ /></a>

As you can see the first part of the script merely points to my Cool Blog Links site, one that you may like to join :thumbup_tb: Oh, that’s right you probably won’t want to do that because it requires you to install the above code on your blog that will turn Avast users against you. :annoyed_tb:

The second part of the code merely displays the following small icon Cool Blog Linksby which you can see this blog currently ranks in the top 3. I moved up one because Mitch pulled out when he also got notified of the same warning by other Avast users. Anyway, as you can see there is nothing in that code that could be hiding anything harmful by which I can only assume that Avast has got it wrong when it comes to this site.

Just to be sure I checked Google’s WebMaster tools which showed this blog is free from Malaware and thanks to Kimberly of Just Ask Kim I also used Sucuri SiteCheck and as you can see from the following photo it came up clean.

Scanned Site With Sucuri SiteCheck

Sucuri SiteCheck

It then came to me that perhaps Avast was clairvoyant and it had a preconceived notion that my Cool Blogs Links site was infected so I scanned that site as well.

Site Scan using Sucuri

So, what does that tell you except that Avast has got it wrong!

Speaking about programs that seem not to be working as well as they should, has anyone found that the GASP plugin seems to be letting more spam through than usual Lucky for me Akismet gets the ones GASP lets slip through but I know you don’t all use Akismet. There are some days where it picks up over thirty spam comments and that could be a pain if you had to delete them manually.

Cool Blog Links Top 10 Coolest Blogs

Once upon a time a there was a man with a dream, and that dream was to bring to life a site that would one day link to all the coolest blogs in the blogosphere. That dream, in part came true on December 12th 2008 when Cool Blog Links came to life.  That man just happened to be yours truly and in almost 18 months it’s member base has grown to a whole 19! Yes you have heard right my treasure dream site has 19 members. OK, who the hell is that laughing in that background? Obviously not a member. Could someone please show that person the door, Mitch I reckon you can escort that low life out.

Yes, our member base is low but that doesn’t matter because our members are the best of the best and it’s only a matter of time before we will be beating them back with a stick. :tongue_rolleye_ee:

Seriously folks even with a relatively small member base Cool Blog Links has still obtained a PR3 ranking. As in the past I have decided to reward the top 10 members, that is those members that are currently ranking in the top 10 at the time of writing this post. The first such post was published on March 29th 2009 and the second on November 11th 2009.

As you would expect the top 10 blogs change as time goes by and so without further ado I would like to present the latest top 10 cool blogs.

  1. Tech18.com: Although a relatively new comer this blog has shot to the top.  It’s latest post, HTML5: What? Why? How and When discusses the enhancements to HTML that will may or may not be the bees knees in HTML? See what Sunil Jain has to say about it all.
  2. So, You Want To Be A Banquet Manager: Was the top dog for quite some time but is now running second. This blog is full of entertaining stories about what being a banquet manager is all about. It’s latest post, Hey Sales Chick – Breakfast is Only For An Hour and a Half! is just a sample of the interesting things that can happen when working in the hospitality industry.
  3. I’m Just Sharing: Yep, my good mate Mitch has shot to no.3 overtaking his good mate in the process. His blog covers many topics and is always a great read. It seems that one of his latest posts, My Gripe With WordPress.com Blogs outlays some of their short comings.
  4. Work From Home Business Blog: Peter Lee has been in the top 10 since day one and that’s not at all surprising seeing how he’s always writing great content in his quest to keep his readers up to date such as helping those who Wanna Know What Google Sees In Your Blog’s Home Page?
  5. The Shadows Of My Mind: If my memory serves me Lindsay is a fellow Aussie blogger and his blog also covers a wide range of topics. His post on Final Fantasy VIII – First Impressions also talks about his first encounter with the latest 3D movies.
  6. What A Load Of Bullshit:  Yep this is one of mine and it does really well in the SERPS.
  7. Wassup Blog: Yeah, there’s no need to tell you anything about this blog :drunk_tb:
  8. Scenic Adelaide: Yep another of my blogs. Imagine that, I have three blogs in the top 10. Not happy with that? The why not join and try to knock me off my perch.?
  9. Anne On Life: Anne is the one of two women to make it to the top 10. Way to go Anne. Anne can be hormonal at times as she admits in her post Every Child Needs Love, but then what woman isn’t? Only kidding ladies, you know I loves ya all.
  10. Expressive World:  Another lovely female blogger, Ana, owns this site and her blog is all about expression. She loves to post beautiful photos each one accompanied by something meaningful. I particularly like the Your Beauty In This World.

I’ve decided to make this post sticky for awhile so that those listed in this post will get the most benefit from being on the front page of a PR4 blog. Naturally I am hoping that this post will attract more members and there are advantages other than be listed on future Top 10 updates such as being listed on a PR 3 site, not to mention the added traffic that Cool Blog Links will send your way. I’ve just checked my Google Analytic and I was surprised to find that it is the number one source of traffic to this blog, no.2 being Twitter.

Even though I have an ‘About‘ Page I reckon there would be a fair few people who have never bothered to look at it and so they wouldn’t know that apart from some other blogs I also have two photo blogs, Scenic Adelaide and Photo2Blog as well as  Top Sexual Aids blog which is just starting to pick up steam. This post has nothing to do with SEX, I just thought I would give it a little plug, and all to do with the right things to do with a photo blog.

I’ve seen a fair few photo blogs that have some fantastic photos but very little traffic and there is a very good reason for this. All the blogger has done is paste the photo with little or no dialogue to support it. One thing you have to remember is that the Googlebots don’t have an eye for photos at all, so unless you write something about the photo they’re never going to find it.

Let’s take the following example;

waterfallgully

It’s a nice enough photo but those damn Googlebots aren’t going to pick it up at all so it will never get indexed unless you write something about it. Googlebots aside you really should give your visitors some information about the photo as they more than likely want to know something about it.

That particular waterfall is known as First Falls and it can be found at Waterfall Gully which is a suburb of Burnside. The falls itself is part of the Cleland Conservation Park and is about 15-20 mins from where I live.

waterfall

It really is a lovely spot, one where you can take long walks along the tracks or even stop in for a bite to eat at the Waterfall Gully Restaurant which is only metres away from the falls itself.

restaurant2

Unfortunately it’s not open all the time. Last I looked it’s open Thursday to Monday 11.00am – 5.30pm and Friday evenings but bookings on that night is essential.

Of the two Photo Blogs Scenic Adelaide gets a hell of a lot more search engine traffic and that’s probably because the subject matter involves places of interests rather than photos of flowers and stuff. As can be seen from Cool Blog Links it rates in the top 10 blogs.

Speaking of Cool Blog Links, Google has seen fit to give it a PR3 on the last PR update so if your the kind who’s interested in increasing your PR you may even consider joining and get some of that link juice.

Sorry about that, I got a little sidetracked with some self promotion :innocent1_tb: Let’s get back to the photos shall we. I know that there are some of you who are thinking that you’re wrotten photographers, well guess what, so am I. The thing is today’s digital point and shoot cameras are so good it’s not all that hard to take a good photo. That and the fact that you can take virtually hundreds of photos using different angles and perspectives means that your bound to get a few really good shots.

The fact that you can post it straight onto you blog means that there aren’t any development costs. Another thing to remember is that every photo can be a story unto itself and so they can make great filler posts when you’re stuck for something to write.

A Blogger’s Opinion Is Highly Valued

This is very true, if it wasn’t so why are advertisers, unless you have a Blogger blog, willing to outlay so much money to have bloggers review their sites, products or services. It’s because they know that a lot of people listen to what many bloggers have to say.

They listen because bloggers are people, just like themselves, who have acquired a certain amount of knowledge through life and online experiences. This being the case I would like to ask you, my valued readers and supporters for your opinion as to why my site Cool Blog Links has only got 14 members since it’s conception over a year ago.

I know that I haven’t been promoting it at all, but seeing as how it gets a fair few hits from the various search engines I would have thought that some of those may have been persuaded to join. You would think that if you did a search for cool blog etc. and the link turns up on the first page that perhaps that alone would be incentive enough to join?

Cool Blog Links is a site for bloggers to list their blogs. It has many categories from Affiliate to SEO. If your category is not listed it can easily be added. All that’s required is that members paste a code on their blog which would display this image The top ten blogs have their ranking displayed on the trophy cup. The code is necessary because it allows the site to keep track of page views etc and also allows people to vote for their blog.

Anyway, for those interested, if you could maybe have a look at it and give me your honest opinion as to why you wouldn’t make use of this free service, one which provides another backlink to your blog from a PR2 site?

Giving Link Luv To Cool Blog Links Top 10 Members

Rewarding Top 10 Members Of Cool Blog Links was a post I did way back in March of this year, and was all about rewarding the top 10 members of Cool Blog Links, my free directory of Cool Blogs. I promised then that I would do an update listing the current top ten members and I reckon that this has been a long time coming.

Things have changed over time, some members dropping off and new ones signing up. I reckon for many, the most important change is that Cool Blog Links has a PR1 which isn’t all that bad seeing that I haven’t done any promotion at all.

Before listing the top 10 I would like to invite others to join, as it still ranks #1 for the search term Cool Blog Links. Not to mention that those who list in the top 10 will get featured in the next update, and when you consider that this is a PR4 blog, getting a mention will mean a very important one way link to your blog.

OK, now for the top 10 members.

  1. So You Want To Be A Banquet Manager:  Previously #4 it’s risen to the #1 spot. It’s really a pretty interesting blog about all the things that can happen in a banquet manager’s job. The latest post The Dreaded Wedding Breakfast just goes to show how interesting this job can be.
  2. Gratis Lagu: I’m afraid I can’t tell you too much about this blog because it’s not in English. I think it’s in Indonesian, but at least the latest post, Digital Karaoke Amplifier VS Mixer Karaoke Amplifier, has an English heading.
  3. What A Load Of Bullshit: One of my blogs, has risen from #5 to #3. This blog continues to surprise me as it continues to do well in the SERPs as well as being a good earner.
  4. Work From Home Business Blog: Peter Lees blog is down from #3, but knowing Peter I expect him to creep up again. His latest post, Blog Income and Stats – October 2009, shows how well he is doing.
  5. WassupBlog: Yep, I’ve risen from #7 :clap_tb:
  6. I’m Just Sharing: This is Mitch’s blog, and as usual Mitch and I are continuously fighting to be ahead of the other. It seems that for now I’m in the lead. Mitch’s last post, Do Images Increase Readership?, is about a test he’s doing as to whether or not images in a post will actually increase readership to a blog.
  7. Expressive World: IS one of the newer members and has already aspired to the top 10 list. Ana, the blogger, is all to do with writing about ‘the gateway to her inner awareness and expressions, her last post AW November Blog Chain 2009: The Art of expressing what is, about a writer’s forum NaNo and Ana’s Writing Survival List.
  8. Scenic Adelaide: Another of  my blogs, has remained static, as in it hasn’t moved since the last post. Like my Load Of Bullshit blog, it does pretty well in the SERPS, as most of the traffic is search engine related.
  9. Top Sexual Aids: Considering that this is one of my newest blogs I’m surprised it’s in the top 10 at all. Damn, who am I kidding, it’s not all that hard when you only have 14 members. :lol_ee:
  10. Photos 2 Blog: Well, you look at that, another one of my blogs…..that’s two photo blogs in the top 10 that belong to me.

So, that means I have 5 blogs in the top 10, and while I don’t mind being there I wish I had more members to contend with. So what about it guys, why not join and give me some competition. It’s free and perhaps you could be part of the next update.

While it’s free to join, you will require to post a snippet of code on your blog. I have mine in the right side bar. The code will display a small icon which will allow your readers to vote for your blog. Also the top ten blogs will have their ranking displayed in the icon.
