Using CJU’s Rotating Banner Function

I don’t know how many of you are members of Commission Junction, and I was just wondering if you knew that they offered rotating banners for their members to use on their blogs or websites? At first I thought that they did not offer this feature and I thought the worse of them for it.

For those of you who do not know what rotating banners are, its a cool feature that enables you to display a different banner every time your page is refreshed. I’ve include a rotating banner below for you to test;

Go ahead, refresh the page to see what I mean. Having a rotating banner in a post is probably not the best place to put it as it’s unlikely people will refresh your page just so they can see the banners change. If you have a busy blog though with many commentators there may be an advantage to display different ads upon each visit.

The other benefit of rotating banners is you do not have to worry about advertisers terminating their account and then having to remember where you pasted the code as this is done automatically.

Just follow these steps to set up your own rotating banner.

  1. Click on the ‘Get Links’ tab
  2. Now click on the ‘SmatZone Settings’. From this page you construct the SmartZones for any of your sites. You can even have different SmartZones for the same site, so you can have one for comments, one for your sidebar and even one for your header or footer and can name each zone accordingly.
  3. When constructing your zones you get to pick the type, whether it’s a banner, link or product, as well as the size. I usually go for the ‘Banner, Free’ one as it allows me to have all different sizes of banners. I use these specifically in the sidebar so that it will display different sized ads with every page view giving the blog a different look each time.
  4. Once you have constructed your SmartZones, the next step is to find the ads to display as part of your rotating banners. First you select your advertiser, and then the ad, or ads, of your choice by ticking the box next to the ad. Then scroll to the bottom of the page, once youve made your selections of the ads you want to display, select the SmartZone you want the ad to appear in and then click the ‘Add to SmarZone tab and it will take you to your SmartZone setting page showing you all the ads you have selected. Once satisfied, click the Get SmartZone Code tab and paste the code into your blog, wherever you wish the banners to appear.

Getting The Most From Your Ad Space

I’m a member of quite a few affiliates and what really pisses me off is those emails that state that one affiliate or another that I have been advertising has terminated their account and could I please remove their ad and replace it with another. The problem is, unless I have it on the home page or something, I don’t remember where the hell I’ve put the damn thing, and I’m not going to waste a day just looking for it.

That got the old brain a whirring as I just had to work out a way of being able to display ads but not having to worry about them folding on me. Then I remembered a feature of ClixGalore, one that until just before this post I was not making use of. The feature that I am talking about isn’t unique to them as there are a lot of other sites that utilize it, it’s just that I wasn’t taking advantage of it. I am talking about rotating ads. This is where you select those affiliates that you are interested in, you then enter the code into your blog with the knowledge that a new ad is shown every time the page is refreshed. Example below.

I’ve moved Amazon over to the right sidebar so that I can now display ClixGalore in a more prominent position. I’ve also chosen a variety of sizes, from skyscraper ads to the 125×125 ads to mix things up a bit. I like the fact that they have a selection of PPC ads available so that I know I will at least make something when someone clicks on an them. The best hing about it is that if an advertiser decides to pull out I needn’t worry anymore about those annoying emails as they are automatically removed from the rotation.

I’ve even decided to start up a comment profile so I can occasionally put one in a comment. When I get time I will set up different profiles so I can have one to promote different products for different occasions such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas and even Thanksgiving for my mates in the States.

I am really interested in how many people have received an email from Google introducing the launch of their ‘interest-based advertising’? According to Google;

Interest-based advertising will allow advertisers to show ads based on a user’s previous interactions with them, such as visits to advertiser website and also to reach users based on their interests (e.g. “sports enthusiast”).  To develop interest categories, we will recognize the types of web pages users visit throughout the Google content network.  As an example, if they visit a number of sports pages, we will add them to the “sports enthusiast” interest category.  To learn more about your associated account settings, please visit the AdSense Help Center at http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/topic.py?topic=20310.

This raises some privacy concerns as it seems that Google is taking another step towards the ‘Big Brother Is Watching You’ approach. I mean do we as users really want to be categorized depending on our surfing habits. Heck, 90% of the time I am inadvertently directed to porno sites, but does that mean that I will categorized as a pervert or a dirty old man? Then, once I am stuck into a category, does that mean that every time I visit a site, regardless of what that site is, I will be shown ads befitting my so-called depraved state?

It seems that the only way around this is to install a plugin that will allow me to modify my ‘interest’ categories or to even opt out of the system. Damn, another bloody plugin, and then one has to wonder what other information this plugin will leach from my system. As  bloggers, this ‘interest-based system’ poses another problem, as we now have to update our privacy policy to reflect the fact that our blogs are using Google’s new system, and these changes have to be made by April 8, 2009! Naturally Google can not help us with the language we use to tell people of these changes because “publisher sites and laws vary across countries, we’re unfortunately unable to suggest specific privacy policy language.” Gee, thanks so much guys. Still we can opt out altogether by;

  1. Sign in to your AdSense account.
  2. Visit your My Account tab.
  3. Go to the Account Settings page.
  4. In the Interest-based Ads Preference section, click edit.
  5. Select the button marked Do not show ads based on user interest categories and save your changes.

This does also come with a warning saying that by opting out we may be cutting our own throat by decreasing our earning potential. So, tell me my blogging friends, how will this effect you? Are you happy about it? Will you opt out? Is this another invasion of user privacy?

Edit: I’ve just this minute decided to opt out and have started a poll to see the intentions of others towards Google’s latest escapade. Reblog this post [with Zemanta]

I have been a paid blogger, in that I’ve been paid to do posts advertising certain products and services, and I have learned over the years that there are a whole lot of advertisers out there willing to pay good money to have their links and selected keywords out on the blogosphere for the search engines to pick up on. They do this because that realize the potential for exposure that blogs represent and knowing this has led to the emergence of sites such as Pay Per Post, Blogsvertise, Smorty, Review Me and a myriad of others that are willing to act as a medium for Bloggers and Advertisers, and doing quite well out of it as well.

Advertisers will pay a minimum of $5 to hundreds of dollars for a post of up to three hundred words depending on the PR (PageRank) of the blog. The problem is that the actual post is only on the front page of the blog for a short time before it disappears into the archives. After that it all depends on the prowess of the blogger in regards to SEO and Key Word selection on whether or not it will ever be seen again.

[eminimall]

It makes much more sense to pay for either a link or a banner on the front page of a blog as it is there right until the ad runs out getting maximum exposure. Knowing this to be true I am offering several key spots on this blog for those who are interested with the guarantee that your link will stay on the front page for as long as you are willing to pay for the spot. Because this blog is brand new and has yet to receive a PR prices for a spot will be more than reasonable. Naturally I will be trying to get maximum exposure for WassupBlog and you may be interested to know that my last two blogs received a PR3 in under three months. The main point to remember is that you are guaranteed that your link will always be on the main page and will not be lost in the archives like a normal paid post would.

OK, so let’s talk turkey! How much will it cost for you to advertise on this blog? Let’s look at the options.

  1. A simple link will only cost $1 per month unless your link is at the top in which case it will be $5
  2. 117×30 button only $2 per month
  3. 124×124 square only $2.50 per month
  4. 468×60 banner only $3 per month displayed at the bottom of the blog
  5. 468×60 banner at the top of the blog will only set you back $5 per month

These prices will only increase once the PR is achieved and until then I will keep them at the low price structure..
