Final Stats For 2009 December Was A Surprise

Isn’t it funny that although we are into the new year, one of my first posts is about something that happened last year. It is in fact the statistics for December 2009. I’m actually quite surprised by them because I thought, seeing as how it was leading up to Christmas and all, that they would be quite low.

As you can see Adsense was up a fraction and although I would like it to be a lot higher I’m pretty stoked with anything that comes my way considering I don’t bother all that much with SEO and keywords etc.

Voxsant went up to two cents which is 100% increase and before anyone goes telling me it’s not worth keeping I use them for the content they provide rather than the monetary value.

Looking through those I notice that E-Junkie is pretty consistent and that Jumbo Affiliates performed rather well, probably because of all the jackpots this month. Even though Amazon didn’t make any sales it generated a lot more clicks because of ad placements and I reckon they may perform better this year.

I also did a lot better with advertisers, so perhaps they’re starting to realize the benefits of advertising on WassupBlog. Paid posts were also up and that’s cool considering the few I took were the pick of the bunch as I knocked back over $200 worth of tasks.

So, that’s probably the last stats report that I’ll be doing as I don’t expect to be doing these posts this year.

Google Finishes Off 2009 By Waving The PR Wand

It’s now 2010 in Aussieland and I’ve awaken to the new year to discover that the almighty Google has waved his magic wand once again and in all it’s misplaced wisdom he’s decided to downgrade some of my blogs, including this one.

WassupBlog is no longer a PR4! Nope it’s now a PR3 which makes no sense because since the last update Wassup’s popularity has increased by a sizable margin, so even though I wasn’t expecting to go up, nor did I expect to go down.

But, you know what? I don’t give a rat’s arse what PR Google decides to place on any of my blogs, because as far as I’m concerned PR is pretty well useless other than a measuring stick that is used to wave in front of advertisers to command a higher price.

Which reminds me, I’m gonna have to change my Advertise Here page. Hey guys, where are you all running off to? PR3 is still pretty good. Oh come on.

There is also another reason why I stopped caring about PR long ago, and that’s because I found it always placed pressure on me to improve my rankings. Once I worked out that pressure was cramping my blogging style I stopped worrying about PR and I’ve never looked back since. I started enjoying blogging again, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s what counts.

Hey guys, it’s reached 41c here today so I reckon we are going to have a real bitch of a summer. It’s so damn hot in this office that even the thermometer died from heat stroke. At least that’s what I thought, but it turned out that the damn batteries are flat. Either way it’s damn hot in here.

Anyway, all this damn heat is going to result in a short post, one whose only intention is to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope that next year will bring you some of the things you’ve been wishing for, let’s face it if we’re greedy we’ll probably end up with nothing.

Here’s to good health and a blogging good year.

I reckon ever since my famous post on why I will no longer link on A list blogs people are starting to realize how important my commentators are to me. I’ve actually done a whole heap of posts on the importance of commenting, inluding, Do You Want More People Commenting On Your Blog, Commentators, How Do I Reward Thee, Let Me Count The Ways and I’ve even done a post on the importance of Commenting Etiquette.

Those were just a few of the many posts that I’ve written on how important it is to not only get comments to your blog, but also how to treat those very special people who take the time to leave a comment.

The trouble is that not everyone is getting as many comments as they would like and this post will expose the top 7 reasons why people are not returning to comment on your blog.

Your Blog Sucks: Sorry, but if you’re not going to spend the time going over your posts to make sure that it’s concise, makes sense to the average reader and is free of grammatical errors then people are’t going to comment. What’s that, you have comments? Then you are a dofollow blog and they’re only there for the link juice.
You’re Not Comment Friendly: This applies to all those people who insist on having those impossible to read Captcha plugins. This also includes those people that insist you have to log in to leave a comment. Honestly if your content isn’t up to par do you honestly think people will jump hoops just to leave a comment.
You Insist On Having A Blogger Blog: Ever since my post on why I Don’t Comment On Blogger Blogs I’ve discovered I’m not the only person who feels that way. If you have a blogger blog with lots of comments, imagine how much better you could do if you had a REAL blog? Don’t believe me, as some of those bloggers like Ching Ya who have made the move.
You Don’t Reply To Comments: Who the hell do you think you are, some snotty nosed A lister that you expect people to comment on your blog and yet you won’t take the time to reply to their comments. People love interaction and if you’re not giving them that don’t expect them to come back.
You’ve Given Them Too Much Information: There are some blogs that I’ve read that are so long and tedious covering every point imaginable, that by the time I’ve finished reading it, if I haven’t dropped off to sleep, I’m too damn tired to leave a comment, even if there was something left for me to comment on. Honestly, it’s a whole lot better to leave your post open so that people have an opportunity to comment. In essence a there are times when less is best.
You Don’t Use A Subscribe To Comment Plugin: Come on guys, wake up and smell the cyber roses. People are so busy commenting on other people’s blogs you don’t honestly believe that they are going to remember which blogs they’ve left a comment on? This plugin is a must as it will enable commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of any subsequent comment. A plugin of this sort is absolutely essential. I actually use the WP Threaded Comment plugin which allows you to edit the message sent to those who have left a comment.

How To Stop Infolinks From Appearing In Your Comments

I reckon that there’s probably quite a few bloggers out there who use in-context text links, such as Infolinks or Kontera, on their blogs as a means of earning extra income. I bet that the majority of them have never given a second thought to the links appearing on the comments left on the posts other than to rub their hands together in glee at the added potential for making a few extra cents.

I know, because I was one of them, until I read Holly’s post on Ethics In Blogging. You see it’s all good and dandy when it appears on your post, but you may be overstepping ethical boundaries when those links appear on someone else’s content, and that’s exactly what comments are, the property of the commentator, who may not want certain text in their comment linked to certain sites.

That alone was something I had to ponder, but then that same day I got hot with another of Holly’s posts that set some serious alarm bells ringing. In her post, In-Context Links? No Comment!, she dropped a huge bombshell. Although she would still read Infolink infected blogs she would no longer comment on them! She also showed several screen grabs of comments that she left on MY blog! Shit, Shit SHIT! I worked so hard to get Holly here and now I was going to lose her because of some double underlined links.

What to do, what to do? Do I throw away the couple of bucks a month I make just so I don’t lose any of my commentators, and by now you all know how important you guys are to me? What a conundrum. Hang on a second. Didn’t someone once say that for every problem there is a solution. All I had to do was turn Infolinks off in the comment section.

How To Turn Infolinks Off In Your Comments

I initially bought the FlexSqueeze theme because it required almost no input from me to make changes in the way my blog looked. This required some sort of manipulation of one of the core theme files in order for it to work, and so it was with some trepidation that I set about solving the problem.

The obvious file that needed editing was comments.php, and the obvious code was , which was supplied by Infolinks guys. The thing was where the heck did I put the damn thing. After looking at the file for awhile I was no nearer working out the answer so I decided to use the old Aussie ‘She’ll be right mate’ attitude and hope for the best.

I pasted right at the beginning of the file, saved it and prayed that my blog didn’t blow up in my face when accessing the comments. Why I didn’t use my test blog is beyond me.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, it bloody worked. So, if you’re like me and want to do the right thing, unless you are using the FlexSqueeze theme, don’t forget to say a little prayer before saving the file.
