Although there are a heap of bloggers who would love to get a higher PR, there are probably just as many who would love to get a good Alexa rating. Ages ago I discovered a way of increasing my Alexa ranking and I’ve decided to pass this information onto all those lucky enough to read this post. Before I divulge this method I think I should tell you a little about what Alexa ranking really is. Where Google Page Rank is a way of monitoring the amount of back links to your site, 0 being the worst and 10 being the best ranking, Alexa records your sites traffic. With the Alexa ranking, the lower you’re number the more heavily your site is visited. Seeing as how some advertisers see the Alexa ranking as being quite important there are many who would love to improve their current ranking.
The way to increase your Alexa ranking is to install the Alexa Toolbar! It’s via the toolbar that Alexa is able to monitor how many hits each website or blog gets as it tracks every user who has a toolbar installed. The information they collect is anonymous so they don’t know who visits what blog, they only know a visit has taken place. That means that even your visits are recorded.
I stopped using Windows Internet Explorer when I switched to Firefox and I couldn’t work out why my Alexa Ranking wasn’t increasing. As an experiment I started to use it again and to my surprise my ranking improved by leaps and bounds. I therefore concluded that it must be related to the Alexa Toolbar and so I looked for a FireFox add-on.
So if you haven’t done so yet I recommend installing this Toolbar as this will give you access to certain useful information such as the traffic trend, reach meter and traffic rank of every site you visit, and let’s not forget that you also increase your own ranking.

STUMBLED!
I have been using the toolbar for quite a while now and it has helped with my rating.
Alas, StumbleUpon has no record of the Stumble, but I suppose it was the thought that counts.
I’m glad that the toolbar gave you the same result as it did for me.
I went ahead and stumbled it too. I kind of forgot about stumble, I need to use it more.
So how do you check for stumbles of your site? I haven’t been able to figure that out.

Hey Ned, it’s really quite easy. I did a post about it called So,Have You Been Stumbled Or Not. Check it out, I think you will find it quite useful.
I just used it to check and I saw you did actually stumble this post. So many say they do but don’t. This is a good way to check up on them.
I stumbled it :)
I added the toolbar this morning thanks so much!

Yes you did Brian, and I thank you so much for taking the time to actually stumble the article as well as adding a comment. I’m glad you liked the tool bar and don’t you think it looks really good sitting there at the bottom of your browser supplying all that information?
It’s another toolbar that watched my every move… I allow it because I can benefit from this shared information but if I do anything private lon the web it’s in a different web browser! Normally it’s all done on my laptop!
I think Alexa is a grat tool and I visit the site 3 times a week! I swear I looked for the browser but it didn’t suppport firefix at the time and I never looked again! Your post was ironic haha and got my the toolbar as well!

Well Brian I reckon that the one advantage of being a blogger is being able to help a fellow blogger every once in a while.

But not everyone willing / want to install alexa toolbar

That’s OK as everyone is entitled to make their own choices as to whether or not they should install the toolbar.
Well Sire.. when I first read the subject of this article I was a little worried. I thought you were going to be mentioning the “cheap” way of increasing your Alexa ranking. Instead you informed your readers of the honest way.
Glad to hear it.

There is a ‘cheap’ way? Now how did I miss that one.
Hi Sire,
Your post came timely. I just changed my computer and forgot about the alexa plugin I had in IE and like you, now used FF instead. So I just installed it after reading your post and was trying to search frantically at the top for it. Gosh I never expected it to be at the bottom. But it’s something I now look at besides the Google PR toolbar. Thanks mate.

No worries Peter, I am glad to be of assistance every once in awhile.
Mine seemed to increase when I added the Alexa site rank widget on my site. That, or just my traffic boosted when I did that. But I went from 1.4M to now 206k.

WoW! I like your new avatar.
Oops, buck to the subject at hand. It’s quite possible that Alexa is able to visitors via the widget as that would account for the sudden shift in your ranking. I may have to take a look at that myself.
Now its STUMBLED, not sure what happened the first time.
:bigsurprise_ee:
No worries Geoserv, these things happen and thanks for the stumble.

Though it can help when you have anything above 200K once you start getting near 100K the difference will be minimal. Unless you’re visiting your own site 100+ times a day, the difference will be determined by actual visitors, not your own visits. It certainly helps you up till that point though.

Yep, but like you said John, getting their is pretty cool and every trick that helps you get their is well worth it. Thanks for stopping by mate.
I saw your comment on Extreme Johns site about the Alexa widget so I came to check it out. I think the only reason I have any Alexa Rank is because you come and comment
I’ll get the widget. Using the toolbar to raise you own rankings seems sort of pointless to me.
.-= Ned Carey@Baltimore Investing´s last blog ..Help! My Home is going to tax sale. =-.
It’s just helps to raise it a little, and like I said on John’s blog, every little bit helps. Besides, if everyone else is doing it why let them have the advantage?
As I’m using Chrome at the moment, and there not being a widget available it’s a moot point for me.
Hi, my site was getting around 1000 views a day but now its gets around 4000. The problems that when my traffic was 1000, my alexa rank was around 800,000 but now that get 4000 visitors, my rank is back to 930000. Could you explain to me where the problem comes from?
Check out what Andrew Segawa recently posted..Jobs in Bank of Uganda
I wish I could Andrew. Do you have their widget on your site? Perhaps that would keep a more accurate count of visitors.
