I’m Back And It’s Good To Be Home

In case you’ve been wondering why it’s been so quiet around here it’s because I’ve been on holiday for the past week. I decided to devote the whole week to my family and so blogging and everything else has taken a back seat.

The holiday is over now though, and while I may share some of my experiences, and the best of the hundreds of photos I took in future posts, I have other things that may take me away from my blogging duties.

Some of those duties involve catching up on stuff that have built up while I was gone but more has to do with things coming to a head in my business life over the coming weeks. So while I may still get a post out now and again and I will try my utmost to reply to comments left on this blog I’m afraid that until things settle down I’m not sure that I’ll be able to reciprocate those comments, as stipulated in this post.

That’s it for now, so just remember, while things may be a little quiet here for awhile, I’ll still be around to keep and eye on you guys.

What You Post Could Cause Google To Disable Your Account!

How many of you have actually read Google’s TOS? Did you know that they could disable ads on your site if you posted something that was contrary to their policy? Naturally they have the right to do so if you post something that’s against their policy, but it seems that it’s all open to interpretation, Googles interpretation that is.

Some months ago I received an email stating that they were disabling all ads on my Top Sexual Aids blog because;

AdSense publishers are not permitted to place Google ads on pages with adult or mature content. This includes any
content that is sexual in intent or may not be considered family-safe.

OK, I can see how that site would fit in that category so I wasn’t too fussed, I simply emailed them apologizing for my error, and removed all their ads.

Imagine my surprise when I received another of these emails, this time about my Load of Bullshit blog, mainly this post. Here is their email in it’s entirety.

Hello,

While reviewing your account, we noticed that you are currently displaying Google ads in a manner that is not compliant with our policies. For instance, we found violations of AdSense policies on pages such as http://www.loadofbullshit.com/2008/05/20/penile-extensions-now-available-via-the-penis-extender-deluxe/.
Please note that this URL is an example and that the same violations may exist on other pages of your website.

As stated in our program policies, AdSense publishers are not permitted to place Google ads on pages with adult or mature content. This includes any content that is sexual in intent or may not be considered family-safe.

As a result, we have disabled ad serving to the site.

Your AdSense account remains active. However, we strongly suggest that you take the time to review our program policies

I was a little surprised as that post was completely tongue in cheek and not of a sexual nature at all. I sure didn’t expect them to stop serving ads to that blog because of it. I removed their ad and then asked them to reconsider because I felt they made it in error. Their reply;

Thanks for your email. However, please be aware that because your site was found to be in violation of our program policies, it is no longer eligible for participation in the AdSense program.

Your account remains active, and you are welcome to place Google ads on other sites which comply with AdSense policies.

No problem, after all it’s their product and so they should be able to police it any way they want. Just as a matter of course I decided to Google the term ‘penile extensions’ only to find that there were several sponsored sex sites. So while I’m not able to display adsense on that site Google is quite happy to take money from sites that link to places a lot more sexually explicit that mine will ever be. Somewhat hypocritical wouldn’t you say?

Anyway, the point of this post wasn’t to have a go at Google at all. Rather it was to get you to go through your posts just in case you’ve inadvertently posted something that may cause Google to stop serving ads to your blog.

Teaching People The Proper Way To Comment

Most people probably don’t realize this but there was a time when I was studying to be a teacher and I only had a semester to complete to get my degree before I gave it all away. There were many reasons for this but the main reason was I discovered near the end that I didn’t have a passion for it and so I decided I would be doing all those kids a disservice were I to continue on.

Now seeing as how I have all that experience I wondered if I could use it to teach people the proper way to comment on a blog. I know there are a whole lot of posts out there that have tried to educate people the proper way to leave a comment, I even wrote one myself called Commenting 101 Important Rules For 2009, yet even with this wealth of information I find there’s a lot of people out there who just don’t get it.

Perhaps they think they understand the proper technique but for some reason they’ve missed some vital point, and so they continue to leave comments that can be so bad some people interpret it as spam and send them to Akismet Hell.

I’m hoping this post will solve that problem and the way I’m hoping to do that is by grading every comment out of 10. That means that I will allow all comments, even the spam ones, and with each grade I will give a reason as to why they got that score.

A warning though, even though I will leave comments that I would normally delete or spam I will remove the url. So, what are some of the things that will cause points to be deducted?

Comments that do not follow the Comment Policy!
Poor grammar, which includes being too slack to use capitals and punctuation. I will make special consideration for those to whom English is a second language.
If I feel your comment has nothing to do with the post, by which I mean you probably didn’t read it.
If I feel you didn’t put any effort or thought into your comment.
All spam comments will obviously receive a score of ZERO

OK, I may add to that list if anything else comes to mind. I reckon it will be very interesting to see what sort of comments this post will solicit. Be warned that I will not hold back because I’m not one who believes being soft on students is a good tactic, and certainly doesn’t teach them anything. :devil_tb:

How I Stopped My Desktop Icons From Flickering

There are so many blog posts out there about why people actually start up a blog, I’ve even done one or two myself, so I am not about to bore you with another one. This post is more about highlighting a PC problem that I had to deal with about a month ago. I did s similar post about how I got Safari to work with my iPod Touch, a post that proved to be very popular with the readers, and I know they weren’t interested with link juice because the bulk of the commentators did not enter an url. Some even sent me money in appreciation of all the time I saved them. That post proved to be so popular I thought it would be a good candidate for MediaPass.

Still, I digress. I first noticed the problem when I booted up my PC as it took the form of all my icons flashing on the desktop. Whilst that was an annoyance I decided that I’d look into it after doing my usual bout of commenting. Imagine my surprise when every time started to comment on a blog the page would reload, thereby losing my comment. I thought that perhaps I could write the comment in NotePad or Word and then cut and paste it into the comment form. Nope, that wouldn’t work because all these characters started appearing automatically, mainly the date, making it all a wasted effort.

Now I’m pissed. First I thought that I had picked up some virus or something so I did a scan of the PC and it came up clean. It took me ages to find a solution and when I did resolve the issue it was something completely unexpected;

Why does commenting on WordPress Blogs cause the post to reload? That search was a bust so I tried.
Why do characters appear automatically in Word? That also didn’t come up with anything useful, so back to the drawing board.
How can I stop the icons from flashing on my desktop? Yep, that one gave me a lot of hits so I had to refine the search some by stating that I was using XP.

It took me literally days to work it out, and I did everything from downloading and running malaware programs to hurling abuse at the monitor, none of which worked, although swearing at the computer did let of a little steam.

I finally came across something that made no sense but I thought I would give it a try. Someone posted somewhere, I wish I made a copy of the link, that perhaps it all had to do with the PC’s display adapter. It turned out to be the correct fix, and if you’re having the same problem following these steps may fix it.

Go to your control panel and click on system.
Click on Hardware
Click on Device Manager
Click on the (+) next to Display adapters which will show you your current display adapter.
Right click on that adapter and select Update driver…
This will bring you to Hardware Update Wizard. Select the first option, Install the software automatically (Recommended) This may take awhile so be patient.
Several drivers should come up and I selected the first one, which worked fine for me.

That’s it, everything has been fine since. So if your icons are flickering on your desktop or your getting pissed because your commenting keeps getting interrupted by your page refreshing, perhaps all you need do is update your display driver.

Edit: It happened again, and this time the above method did not work. Another fruitless search and then I started unplugging things to see if that made a difference. Guess what turned out to be the culprit? It was the damn keyboard. Everything stopped flashing once I unplugged the keyboard! I bought a new keyboard and everything is working as it should.
