In Search Of The Right SEO Company

If I was to ask you what the one thing was that every webmaster or blogger craved for I wonder what your answer would be. WOW! You won’t believe this but I just had this mental image of a whole lot of you screaming “Money! We want to line our pockets with money!” I have to admit I understand where you’re coming from, but you all know that’s not going to happen unless you have a whole heap of traffic. It doesn’t matter how good your blog or website is, without traffic its lying dead in the water, or in this case, cyberspace.

So, where do we get this traffic from? Well, when you consider that almost 80% of surfers use one of the major search engines to find what their looking for, the main one being Google, then it’s obvious that you want to achieve top google rankings, and by top I mean you want your site to be in the top ten because that’s where most people commence their search from.

The problem that most people have is they don’t know how to achieve this, a task which is made all the more difficult by the search engines changing algorithm. What they need is a SEO company that will do all the work for them. Now there are a lot out there that will beat their chest saying to the world that they offer the best SEM services (Search Engine Marketing) out there so it’s no easy task to find the right one for you. But then we all know that life was not meant to be easy so it will be up to you to do the research.

You can ask around to see what SEO companies other webmasters or bloggers are using, and you can also use the search engines to see who they recommend. Once you’ve narrowed it down to a select few you will need to have a chat with them and it’s then that you need to ask all the right questions. John F Kennedy once said “ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Well in this case you need to ask the particular SEO firm what they can do for you. It may even include the construction of some Ecommerce website design or something entirely different. You will certainly want to ask how they intend to get you in the top 10 of the search engines and you may even request that apart from your main site you also want your FaceBook Fan page and YouTube videos to appear there. Why not, the more exposure you get on the first page of Google the better, right?

You may even ask to see some of the work they’ve done for other clients and if they are as good as they say they will be more than happy to accommodate you. As always doing the homework fist will ensure that you make the right choice and making the right choice is the first step on your path to lining those pockets of yours with cash.

  1. I think the most important question to ask is what technique you use to optimize a site? I mean confirm first that they don’t use black hat SEO as what happened in the case of “JC Penny”.

  2. Definitely that choosing the right SEO company is a pretty difficult thing. However just like you mentioned, searching carefully and talking with the right people, can be very helpful in choosing the right SEO firm and boosting your profits.

    1. For someone who has absolutely no idea how SEO works its essential that they ask around, not only to get the best deal but to hire the best people for the job. Having the Internet means that people now have a greater selection of experts to choose from.

  3. When searching for SEO companies to optimize your website in order to achieve higher rankings, always get several 3rd party references and case studies before hiring them. Also they should be able to explain exactly which methods they employed in order to achieve these rankings.

    1. So true Andreas, when searching for the right SEO guys to work on your site you would have apply the same criteria you would use if you were searching for a qualified tradesman to do work for you. You would ask around talking to friends and relatives. You could ask for contact names of others they have done work for so you could contact them, The bigger the job the more you would want to know about them and the work they do.

  4. I agree with Andreas on this one Sire. I would want to hear what experience others have had with using their services. Like in the case of JCPenney, I would hope that those tactics have been halted for now and most are using only legitimate sources. I sure wouldn’t want to be one of those sites that got the big slap.

Great post and one people should really pay attention to when looking for a good company to work with.

By the way, cute Easter layout on the site!!! :-)

    Adrienne

    1. Looks like I will have to look up JCPenney to see exactly what went on there because this is the first I’ve heard of it. By the sounds of things some SEO company did the wrong thing by them. Just goes to show how important it is to do your research so you can hire the best one possible that’s within your budget.

  5. I Agree with you on this one. People think it is alot easier than it is. it is also very time consuming it is better left to people who really know what they are doing.

  6. Believe me you don’t want to ask your web developer for SEO help. They all sell it in as part of their packages but generally don’t have a clue what to do.

I have some good friends who are web developers who do this and whilst I argue with them that they barely know one tenth of what is involved they still don’t believe me and go on charging their clients in the belief they are doing a good job.

All I can say is personal recommendations count. There are so many crooks in the business that you can hand over 6 months worth of pay without getting a single result if you’re not careful.

That’s why I’m glad I found the guys I use as they are great but before that I had a very difficult time and waster a lot of money. In short don’t go for the cowboys promising the earth as just like real world bad builders you’ll end up paying the price!

    Cheers
    Josh

      1. Hi Sire,

That’s probably OK although I’d check to ensure they really know what they’re doing and its not just a developer donning the hat for the ‘seo’ department. All I can say is my experience of web developers claiming to know what they are doing on this front has been patchy at best to downright rip off. I’d always go direct to someone recommended by a friend if possible as its too important to get wrong.

        1. I’m not going to argue with you especially as each has their own special field and you can’t expect one to know too much about the other blokes expertise.

  7. Yes you have to be careful if you decide to hire a SEO company. They will mostly all have similar claims, but not all of them will deliver results. Some are more concerned with keeping you paying as long as possible while delivering minimal results. You also have to be aware of the ones who will make false claims about who their past clients were and what results they achieved. Like Gustavo, I prefer to hire SEO pros through forums or freelance job sites. That way I can see reviews from past clients. Also I can be sure they will do a good job, otherwise they will get bad ratings.

    1. Just goes to show that picking the right company to do your SEO for you can in itself be a daunting task. Since I replied to Gustavo’s comment I wonder if the SEO people you get from forums are as good as the experts working for SEO companies?

  8. I know a lot of people who have been “unlucky” with seocompanies. Its really important to get everything on paper on whats to be done cause wrong seo tactics can be really harmfull to a webpage.

    1. Actually, that’s a great tip Christian, get it all on paper so that you have something to refer to when it comes to discussing whether or not they got the job done properly. :thumbup_tb:

  9. I personally do most of the SEO for my site. But when I have funds and I want to target high keywords I usually go to forums. I just search for the ones that have good ratings and reviews.

The good thing about it is that you can find someone on popular forums that can do good/decent SEO for you at almost any budget. A good range would be to spend from $100-$400. There’s also some that you can pay them %50 upfront and the rest after completion. Heck, there are even some that would take payment after completion, but they only usually do it for high ranked members of the forum.

  10. Great post. I think with the wide array of tactics and approaches to SEO it can be really hard to find a company that is both trustworthy and willing to approach things your way. I think for a blog you’d be fine to find someone via a freelancer site like elance or guru with a lot of positive feedback. A bigger job like a network of blogs or a big business might require going with an SEO firm..which is always tricky. Though it can help to frequent SEO forums, blogs, and sites for recommendations. Certain firms, like SEOmoz and Distilled, have really solid reputations throughout the SEO community. As far as pricing…I’m sure SEOmoz’s rates are out of this world. But..as they say you get what you pay for.

    1. “You get what you pay for,” that stand true for just about everything you pay for these days. Although there can be a lot of occasions where you can find a bargain just by doing a little research.

  11. At least if you want to choose SEO agencies, choose those that are in the top 10 @ google for keyword SEO…

    1. I don’t think using SEO as a search term will get you the required results. I just tried it and a wiki article came out on top.

  12. Hello Brian,

SEO companies can be a really money sink whole if you don’t know how to look or what to look at.

In my opinion the best way to find a seo company is to ask a friend, but be careful not to ask a friend that is an affiliate to one, because money can change everyone.

Also, you should draw some clear points about what they should achieve (don’t trust something like we will increase your rankings), something like giving them keywords and telling them the rankings you want (eg. the keyword x I want to be on first page 5th result).

      1. Yeah, i screwed up again, I was reading brian’s guest post(from the famous bloggers traffic generation contest) while I was typing the comment I was thinking about it.

I think this is what you get when you are not 100% focused. Sorry Sire!

  13. Beware of those contracts as well that they like to tie you into, as far as I’m concerned if they are that good you shouldn’t have to have a contract, because you will be happy to stay with them if they get the results. Contracts are often there because they cant get the results but it does guarantee them your money for a few months.
khaled recently posted…What Are RhinestonesMy Profile

    1. I agree there is no need to have a contract, at least not that I can see. The perfect situation would be to pay a deposit to get the job and then to pay in full once the requirements are met.

  14. Hey just one point to make here is not to go by the glitter and glam advertisements…..
Do make a point to check out the company’s authenticity and past works..
All that glitters is not gold….

    1. It’s always important to do the research no matter what you’re about to do.

  15. Hey nice post and all i want to say is that before choosing any compnay for SEO make a point to check out for its past experience and work that has been done by them…..
Also see the fine prints that are mentioned in the contracts sometimes….

    1. Yeah that fine prong may be a killer so you will want to bring a magnifying glass with you to any meetings :smile2_ee:

  16. Nice post, Thanks for this suggestion how to choose a good SEO company but as my point of view that you should ask them how they’ll achieve your desired result and what should be their SEO Process of getting that desired result. This will clearly give you idea whether company is a good one or not.

    1. Yeah, I reckon you’re not the first one to comment with that particular point of view.

  17. From 2011 only those SEO companies can survive that use white hat techniques. The company that have writers to write relevant and unique articles are always considered at top in providing results.

  18. Most of those SEO Company are too expensive. This is the reason why not everybody can afford them. If you have a tight budget then better do it on your own and just get some software to assist you on building those links.

For some going to freelance site like Rentacoder and other site is their best resort but I do think that it would be better to do it on your own since you will gain complete mastery over it.

    1. I don’t do much SEO but when I do I use Market Samurai, and although I am still learning how to use it properly I’ve found it to work extremely well.

  19. Some of seo farms employ black hat,so it is very difficult to choose which one is good or which one is bad.Again, they ask for big sum of money.I prefer do seo myself

    1. It’s good that you can do that but unfortunately not everyone is competent enough to do their own SEO, which is, as I said above, why I use the help of Market Samurai to do my SEO.

      1. If you want I can help your site in seo

  20. It is a good idea to check online for the best seo company. A lot of seo companies have unrealistic goals that can’t be delivered to the clients. SEO can be very tricky and you have to tweak your website in case of an update. SEO should be done correctly for realistic goals and milestones. I totally agree with you on this.

    1. Sure checking online is always an option but I reckon using word of mouth would be the best option.

  21. Hi Peter
    The black art of SEO.
You can do a lot of it yourself.
Well written articles – good title tags and lots of links.

I’ve managed to get a few of my articles in the top 5 of the SERPS.
Type in “public speaking humour” and out of 5,720,000 my article is….. ist, top, numero uno.

Not bad for a self taught SEOer.

  22. How would I found good SEO company? I would obviously search on google for it using proper keywords. If they’re good, they will be in the top 10 :)

  23. I was thinking of going to a seo company to help on some of my sites but in the end, I thought it would be better to learn it myself. It really isn’t that hard but it does take time and consistency. In any case, you have made some good points in your post.

    1. There’s nothing wrong with doing it yourself if you have the time and learn the expertise of SEO.

  24. In 2011 Google has done some major changes in its algorithm and according to me SEO has become more easy as all those site are penalized that do not have quality in optimization work either it is on site or off site.

  25. Its very hard to find the best SEO company and I think the best thing is do your own SEO for your online business. Just saying..

    1. That’s always an option Dorothy, but there are a lot of people out there who don’t have any idea how to do SEO properly and would rather pay someone else to do it for them
