Giving Your Blog That Christmas Feel
I would like to thank Rose for her post Christmas Holiday Themes For WordPress, as it motivated me into giving WassupBlog a Christmas theme. This would be my third theme modification, as I’ve already made one for Easter and Halloween. Naturally, the FlexSqueeze theme makes it all so easy that I actually look forward to playing around with it to blend it in with the holiday seasons.
The first thing I had to do was to find a suitable header. I finally decided to borrow one from another theme as I felt it set the right mood. Then I reduced the width of the blog so that it would display the Santa image that I chose for the background.
Adding An Image To Comment Box
I thought it would be pretty cool if I could jazz up the comment box a little by adding some snowflakes so I had a little look at the CSS file to see what I could do. For those of you who were wise enough to purchase the FlexSqueeze theme I thought you might like to know how I did it.
You will need to edit the ‘style.css’ file and I strongly urge you to make a backup before playing around with it.
First find the following lines;
#commentform input, #commentform textarea {
padding:5px;
Below that add the following;
background: url(images/bg-snowflakes5.gif);
Substitute ‘bg-snowflakes5.gif’ for whatever file you want to use as your background, remembering that the file has to be uploaded first in order for it to work. This is a cinch using the upload feature that comes with FlexSqueeze! I suggest you use a very light colored file otherwise people will not be able to see what they are typing.
Adding An Image To Your Post Background
To add to the Christmas look of the blog I decided to change the background of the post area, and for this I chose a lovely snow scene. If you would like to do something similar to your blog then once again you will need to add a little bit of code to your ‘style.css’ file.
Find the following lines;
#content {
width:935px;
position:relative;
float:left;
Just below that enter the following line.
background: url(images/bg-snow-scene.jpg);
Once again substitute ‘bg-snow-scene.jpg’ by the image you’ve selected.
It is important to remember that these modifications to the ‘style.css’ file of this theme will most likely not work on your theme. These modifications can still be done on most themes but you will have to find the right areas that need to be changed.
Apart from these style.css changes all other changes were done via FlexSqueeze‘s option page. The images were all obtained from Free Web Images And Clipart , except for the header which I got from leadcamp.com.
Oh, one last thing. In case you are wondering how I got it to snow, it was by using the Let It Snow plugin.
EDIT: I’ve deactivated the plugin as I noticed it caused a bit of drain on the CPU, and possible made the blog somewhat slower. Even so, I reckon the blog may still remind people of Christmas.
The FlexSqueeze Theme gives my blog that professional look. I loved it so much that I bought the developers license. It's the easiest most customizable theme I've come across. See how easy it is to change your theme's appearance! Compare it to Thesis to see how much better it is! Check out some of the latest Latest UpdatesI highly recommend you to get your FlexSqueeze copy today!

Hi Sire,
Oh, I had to hit refresh before the changes showed up. But now that I can see what you’ve done … I dig it!
To my eye anyway I think the lighter color scheme actually works better than your “normal” design … maybe something to consider after the holidays.
Very nice tutorial on how you did it too. :-)

Thanks Todd, and seeing as how I’m liking the light colors myself, I may have to change the original look once Xmas is over.

It really does make a difference and looks good. Lets see what others have to say about it, curious to know.

Not sure what if I like it or not. The site does seem to be a bit more heavy in my Firefox now and the falling snow doesn’t show too easy because of the light background/theme. Could maybe become a bit annoying as well, depends on your readers I guess.
I don’t think I’m going to do any Christmas changes on my blog though – way too busy just to keep up with adding content :)

Yeah, the speed is probably because of all the extra images. I’ve just optimized them all so it should be a fair bit quicker now.
Changing the look of the blog to match the season may not be for everyone, but I don’t mind because Flexsqueeze makes it so easy.

The animated snow flakes do indeed give the blog that Christmas feel, but I’m not sure if I would add them to my blog, but the background in the comment box is certainly a nice touch ;)

So far, wassupblog is the first blog among my favorites that has taken up the Christmas spirit not just in content but in the theme as well.
I have a feeling that I may soon likewise tinker with mine as well to see if I can inject some Christmas atmosphere in it.
And hey, I agree with Todd that the lighter color scheme seems better than the previous one. It feels more Wassup! than ever. :)

Holy snap! I love it, Sire! I’m a bonafide Christmas maniac, and I’m just digging your background and the beautiful trees and the snowflakes in your comment box!
Thanks for taking the time to share the code with us. I Tweeted this post so the rest of the nuts like me can find you. I’m not going to mess with my own blog though, because it took me 26.4 years to get my Thesis to its current state.

No worries Heather. I’m sure you could make the same changes to Thesis to get a similar effect, but I’m not game enough to attempt it, at least not this year.
Thanks for the Tweet Karen.

Hey Sire,
Looks like Christmas has just landed your blog! Oh wait, the snow is falling. :)
Good job on the background although I’m not really that comfortable with the snow fall effect.
One thing I’ve notice though, your site loads way too slow as it was before.

Thanks Mathdelane, and I notice it was loading slower but didn’t have time to speed things up. I figured it had something to do with all the extra graphics so I optimized them all and is seems a lot quicker now.

Wow.. now you don’t have to write for me to find out it’s almost Christmas now. You really did heaps of work here! I like the snowmen in your header but my favorite would have to be the snowflakes. I always have a thing for snow, maybe because I don’t get any here. =P It feels good even for virtual ones.

Yeah, somehow I don’t think we’re going to get any snowflakes. We have just had our hottest spring weather since the early 1900s. We’ve had a heat wave where several days topped 43C.
Can’t wait till summer. :D

Dang, this made me all cheery. I hate when that happens.
Now, take down those cute snowmen off the banner. They look entirely to happy.
Oh no, I think my Grinchness is fading. I’m starting to feel Christmasie. I don’t know what is happening, I feel funny inside, Is my heart that was 2 sizes to small now swelling to normal size?
I feel filled with happ…..*Farts*. Never mind, it was just gas making me feel full. Now, back to the drab theme like everyone else.
