I’ve been blogging for several years now and I discovered relatively early in the game that having the right domain name had terrific SEO benefits. Nicolas’ post Domain Name Issues explains many of the issues involved with choosing the right domain name.
My problem was that knowing the SEO benefits of choosing the right domain name I still chose domains because I liked the sound of it rather than for any SEO reasons. I mean really, how many people would actually use the search term Wassup, or Blogsire? My Load Of Bullshit blog was really a fluke as I never imagined how many people would actually use the word bullshit when searching the net.
With my last two blogs I thought it was about time I did things right and so I purchase domains that reflected what I was intending to market, Top Software Online for tackling the shareware software market, and Top Sexual Aids for targeting the sexual health market. The latter is not quite a month old and it is already doing fairly well in the SERPs or search engine results pages, and it is entirely to do with the domain name.

This is extremely fortunate for me becuase I do not feel comfortable using the url when commenting on other blogs
If anyone has any ideas how to market this blog I would love to hear from you.
Speaking of purchasing the right domain name, Doug is actually selling MrBlogging.com! What a brilliant domain for a blog all about blogging, not only is keyword rich, it’s easy to remember and looks damn good to boot. Not to mention you won’t be embarrassed to leave your url when commenting.

You have 4 blogs Sire? How do you do it? And why do you use this blog when you comment in other blogs? Mahybe you should write about that.
MrBlogging.com? That’s an awesome domain, it’s probably worth a lot of money.
.-= Asswass´s last blog ..Hiburrito’s Polls for Market Research =-.
I actually have nine, read my about page, plus I occasionally post on a couple of community blogs. I’m not sure I understand what you mean by
Hey Sire, sorry if I didn’t explain myself. What I was trying to ask you is that if you have 9 blogs, why do you put this blog on the URL of the comments you leave in other blogs. Is this your main blog?
.-= Asswass´s last blog ..Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza in Maxim Magazine =-.
Now I understand,
Sorry mate. I do consider this my main blog. I have used by BS and photo blogs occasionally, but, for obvious reasons, never my sex blog.
I’ve found that even with no backlinks, I can rank well for some terms based on having a good solid domain name. It’s really underrated in terms of SEO importance.
.-= Bob@Free Online Speed Reading´s last blog ..Free Software =-.
Which particular one did you search for Bob? Also I tried to leave a comment on your blog, twice, and I got the following message
The thing is I couldn’t find one?
This title kinda sums up that new website of yours ;)
I think the best free way to advertise would actually be on blogs that talk about…that…subject. That, and forums that like to discuss those things. The only problem with it is you may see a lot of things you would rather not! lol
.-= Dan´s last blog ..I Can Has iPhone Money? =-.
The problem is Dan that most of those sites I’ve come across are pretty crappy and unprofessional and I don’t want any of them coming to my blog expecting to reciprocate a comment I left on theirs.
Domain names are also good for branding. As far as SEO is concerned, the problem is that almost everyone only thinks Google when it comes to SEO. It is obviously good, considering that Google is the dominant force, but how about other search engines? I can not confirm this yet, but it has been humored that Bing emphasizes heavily on domain names. If that is true, then you have here another good reason why choosing the right domain name is important.
BTW, MrBlogging.com is a great name and I’ll check it out. Thanks
.-= DiTesco @iblogzone´s last blog ..Google Affiliate Program Important Changes =-.
Funny you should say that, because I am getting quite a few hits from Bing.
That is a lot of blogs that you have. I am hoping that my new website will do good with in the search engine because of the keywords that I used. I am working on the website now and I am getting the e-book ready. Greg Ellison
.-= Greg Ellison´s last blog ..The Design Of Your New Site =-.
I actually have nine blogs Greg, just check my about page for a full list. Of course this doesn’t include those few community blogs I’m a member of.
So very true. The first domain name I bought besides my own name was randomreflection.com. I spent quite a few months blogging on it, with writing and study tips, but who is going to search for THAT? :) I let it expire. I’ve done a lot better now finding names for niche sites, even if they are things like lefthandedLIFE.com (to be developed later), at least I got the lefthanded in there.
To promote your TSA site – perhaps just comment on forums and also on sites devoted to cars, motorcycle racing, etc., but not with your name Sire so no one will know it’s you! :)
.-= Christie´s last blog ..The ugly truth about who’s hiding behind that avatar! =-.
I’m actually using D’Sire
as my name. I don’t mind people knowing who I am as I’m not promoting anything unsavory. I have tried searching for sites that are content related but most of them are so bad I don’t want to be associated with them
Hey Sire… The SEO benefits is the exact reason I never sold MakingMoneyOnline.com, as I knew it would do good in the search engines when I finally got around to developing it… which it slowly seems to be doing. I REALLY wish I would have never sold MakeMoneyOnline.com though :(
It’s not to say that people can’t rank high in the search engines with domains that have nothing to do with their niche, I just think it takes a bit more work. Prime examples would be John Chow and Carl Ocab.
P.S. Thanks for the mention of MrBlogging.com being for sale. I do appreciate it.
.-= Doug Dillard´s last blog ..MrBlogging.com is For Sale! =-.
We all make our mistakes mate. Doesn’t look like they did too much with it though. No problems about promoting your sale, it’s not like it required a great effort.
You know, Sire, with the new name, you almost have to just promote it like a website rather than as a blog. As you said, you can’t really find many places where you feel comfortable posting with that domain name, and it’s doing well on its own in the search engines.
As far as domain names go, I’d have to say that I’ve done what you’ve done, gone way out of my way to select domain names that people will actually search for. At this point I still only have 3 blogs, but I have ideas for two more, and one of them might actually do something really big for me. But time will tell; I have other stuff to do first.
.-= Mitch´s last blog ..Do You Turn Comments Off? =-.
Yeah, there’s always other stuff to do. I know the feeling. Still, as far as the promotion of TSA, I’ll keep looking.
I have owned and sold two domains with the word bullshit in them and they were excellent domains. One I actually regret selling, moron.

Choosing a right domain name, specially for business sites is a really essential for SERP’s success. Although, it may not apply for personal blogs or sites.
.-= Ron@Boracay Hotels´s last blog ..Club Ten Beach Resort Boracay =-.
It can do, depending on the domain name.
This is something I still feel is a bit wrong. Even though you have rubbish content you will outrank other sites simply because you have a better domain. This is one of the main reasons to why small niche sites still works.
.-= Stefan´s last blog ..The Advantages Of Being Small =-.
Imagine Stefan if you had good content and a good domain? The blogging world would be your oyster
A shame I have neither then? ;)
.-= Stefan´s last blog ..Build Backlinks With Article Directories =-.
No, but you have great content and without that you would have nothing. Even a good domain name with useless content may get the SERP, but it wouldn’t make any money because no-one would stay on there long enough.
I think, you are right & enough of case studies can be put forward to prove the same. The issue is retention isn’t something that’s got to do anything with domain name & everything with success in long term. Be there & do that!
Thanks for your input Chris, it’s really appreciated.

I’ve recently been experimenting with some niche sites too (although nothing quite as risque) and have come across a similar problem. Most other relevent sites and blogs don’t use keywordluv, dofollow or any of the other friendly linkbuilding plugins, which makes it a lot harder to build links. And I’m sure the problem is magnified even further in your case as people will generally not want to link to anything that may be considered by Google as unsavoury (not saying your site is, by the way – but that may be the perception!)
.-= Rod@Wilson Portable Machines´s last blog ..Tennis Tutor ball machines =-.
Yeah, I know what you are saying, but while the task may be harder it is not impossible. Given the time I’m sure I’ll come up with the right solution.

I think you have done well, with choosing your domains. (But then again, who hasn’t)
These are unique to you, and your experience. I was the same in regards to Expressive World, choosing it because I like the sound of it, whilst at the same time it reflecting what my website was about then. (It started off as a Forum-and was about bringing all different kinds of people on different paths, to one spot. Did very well, until one day had an accident)
Grateful that I chose the name, as it reflects who I am, more so the expressive, rather than the world, which obviously doesn’t coincide with my blog now, but it is within the same sentiment.
I think that there are always SEO benefits when choosing a domain as well as it’s own disadvantages, and I think for the most part it doesn’t lie directly in the name, but more on how you achieve that SEO balance yourself, through the work that you do on it.
You are doing an excellent job, on all your blogs and if you notice, once your doing well, it doesn’t matter what name you have. What counts is that you understand the value of the work you put into it, and the choices you have made have all been in aid of that success, and that your grateful for them.
Really enjoying your blog! :) (This one here heehee)
.-= Ana´s last blog ..Spirit of Womankind =-.
Hi Ana, I like the way you expressed yourself by saying
because that is so true, but in some case having the right domain to start of with would have made getting there easier.
Some people really put keywords in domain name. But to have the domain name with our keyword is so difficult recently. To make this happen I seen people make up to 3 word of domain name. however, simple domain name also needed to make our visitors remember our brand.
Therefore I don’t think putting a keywords in our domain name will be suitable for nowadays online business.

Even though all the top domain names are probably gone, with a bit of time and creativity I think it is still possible to get some great domain names.
Where do you find time to run nine blogs?
I have two plus I try to do some article stuff and find it hard at times.
Love your Top Sexual Aids blog, I seen you have a post on there that I should have my wife read. lol For the woman who…

Hey don’t hold her back Trevor, you may get lucky.
I don’t blog regularly on all nine anymore, things have changed and I no longer have the time.

Yes I just might. But I could also just give her a few rye and coke, that may do the trick also.
