Taking The Time To Increase Your Blog’s Speed

I spent most of yesterday working on the insides of this blog. You could almost call it spring cleaning, being spring and all. :lol_ee: The reason behind it all was that I wanted to speed this baby up a little as it was starting to drag its sorry little ass and we can’t have that now can we?

I’ve read around the traps that the loading speed of any given website is very important because search engines such as Google will penalize slow moving sites. Truth be told though there is something so much more important than the search engines and that’s your visitors. If your site takes too long to load you’re going to piss your visitors off and they’re going to leave without ever seeing what it is you have to offer. So anyway, here’s what I did to improve the loading speed of this blog.

Making Your Blog Load Faster

You really make this a regular part of your blog maintenance, because even though you’ve done it before chances are that over time you’ve gotten slack or added things to your blog that ultimately slowed it down. I reckon that making it part of your spring cleaning routine would be a great idea. The last time I did it was when I wrote about Speeding Up Your Blog To Keep Your Readers Happy sometimes last may. You may want to check that sucker out just to see what I did to make things go faster. That was then and this is now so here’s some of the stuff I did yesterday to improve my readers experience. Be Prepared To Spend Money To Make Money

A few posts ago I told you about Learning How To Save Money Can Make You Rich and I honestly believe that being able to manage your money can actually make you wealthy. You probably won’t become a millionaire but you will be so much better off than if you didn’t manage your money properly. In fact I believe that the majority of those struggling financially or who are in debt are in their situation because they don’t know how to manage their money. This is especially true for those people who have amassed a huge credit card debt. While that post showed ways for people to save money, when it comes to running a successful business you have to be prepared to spend money in order to improve the way your business runs or even to improve the customers experience. Running an online business is really no different.

Spending Money On Your Business Is An Investment

I learned earlier on that a business can only grow if you invest time and money in it. This doesn’t mean that throwing money at a business will make it succeed because it won’t if you’re not running it properly to begin with. Another thing to keep in mind is that the cheaper option is not always the best option. To stress this point I want to tell you a real life story that happened to the company I used to work for.

They were a major milk producing company who needed to update their bottling machine. They had a choice between one that would put the exact amount of milk into the bottle to one that would fill the bottle to the brim. To save a couple of hundred thousand dollars they decided on the latter. Big mistake! Not only was it costing them more per bottle because of the extra product, filling the bottle to the brim caused a major problem. This is because placing the bottles in the crate placed undue pressure on each bottle which could only be relieved by forcing the milk through the lid. This created a major leakage problem, one that customers did not appreciate, causing them to lose a large part of their market share. Read the rest of this entry

A Review Of WP Zon Builder

A couple of posts back I did a review of a free WordPress plugin for making money with Amazon called Making Money With Amazon Is It Possible? I thought the time was right for me to review a paid WordPress plugin that also helps you to put Amazon dollars into your pocket. Naturally we all would love for some kind hearted developer to give us their plugin to review and after waiting for a while for that to happen I decided to go out and buy one myself. See how much I love you guys? :tongue_laugh_ee:

I wasn’t going to hand my money to any old plugin so I did a bit of research and purchased WP Zon Builder.  I used it for the first time today on my Photos 2 Blog site on a post called Nikon D3s MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0 inch LCD! So, how good is WP Zon Builder?

Is WP Zon Builder As Good As They Say?

I can honestly say yes it is, but don’t believe me, this video I just made shows you how easy it is to post professional looking Amazon product reviews on your blog. In case you’re wondering why I did my own rather than use one belonging to someone else it’s partly because I’m trying to build my youtube repertoire but mostly because I wanted to show people how it fits in really well with the FlexSqueeze theme.

The Art Of Writing A Paid Post

I’ve been doing paid posts for many years now and in that time I’ve noticed that a lot of bloggers who are also doing them are going about it all wrong. While their post may be good enough to be accepted by the advertiser it’s probably not adding any value to their blog and they probably won’t be approached by the advertiser again.

Most bloggers who refuse to do paid posts do so because they feel it is unethical or because they feel they may lose their regular readers. I touched on the ethical side of it when I wrote the post called Is It Ethical For Bloggers To Do Paid Posts? That post revealed that most people thought there was nothing wrong with doing paid posts as long as certain criteria were met.

Will Paid Posts Cost You Readers

The answer to this is no it won’t, as long as you put as much effort into doing your paid posts that you do in writing your regular ones. In case you’re thinking of doing paid posts one day I thought I’d outline some of the things I do to ensure I don’t lose any of my valuable readers.

  • Choose The Right Product: This is very important. Even though you may not be writing a review on the product or service you don’t want to be linking to a site that you or your readers may find objectionable.
  • Provide Good Content: I’m shocked at some of the paid posts I’ve read. They are of poor quality and the bloggers usually only provide the minimum word count to fulfill their obligations. They should be putting just as much effort into a paid post as they do in any other post.
  • Review Only Products You Use: Just because someone is paying you to write a review is no reason for you to bullshit your readers. Unless I have actually tried a product or service I will not accept a task that requires me to give a review of said product or service.
  • Link Must Be Related To Post: I try to write the post around the product or service so that when someone clicks on the link they are not taken to some completely unrelated site. It’s not always easy to do but the it is well worth the extra effort.
  • It Must Be Natural: By this I mean that your readers shouldn’t be able to tell it’s a paid post. I don’t mean that as a blogger I am trying to hide anything from my readers, which is why my disclosure policy states that all paid posts are place in the SpecialOps category. I just don’t want those paid posts to appear like sales copy or a commercial. They have to be able to retain the readers interest just like any other post on the blog

Not all advertisers expect you to actually review their product. Most of the time they merely want a link back to their site. Even so they would prefer that link to be part of a well thought out post because anything else would reflect on whatever it is they are promoting.

A New Milestone As My Mail List Hits 50

I’m not all that big on doing milestones, although I have done one or two in the past, but I thought this particular one deserves a post. I started my list way back in December last year when I wrote a post called Why The List Hater Has His Very Own List. Since that time my list has grown to a whopping 50 members! Yeah, yeah, I know that is a piddling amount and you know I don’t really care because I know that at least my subscribers are a dedicated bunch who have joined because they are interested in what I have to say.

I’ve done a few posts about my list since then including Why I Chose MailChimp Over Aweber which is really a review about MailChimp, one that has brought quite a bit of traffic to this blog. I can safely say that to date I am more than satisfied with their services and I have no intention to change.

Why I Am Happy With List Numbers

If you’re a regular reader of this blog you know that I’ve never really supported having a list, the reasons being that most people abuse their list by continually trying to sell them something. I vowed when starting my list to never do that to my subscribers. I think when looking at my low list numbers you really need to compare the way I promote my list to the way others do it.

List Building Techniques

Their Methods

  • The use of annoying popups!
  • Give away freebies to get them to join. A lot of the time they turn out to be less than useless

My Methods

  • I don’t use these on any of my blogs
  • Nope, don’t do that either although I do reward those you do by giving them some linkluv.

Those are the two main ways that others get people to subscribe to their list and apparently they work quite well but I personally dislike them and so I will not be using them on my readers.

Until recently my numbers were even lower and in fact I was even getting one or two who were unsubscribing which resulted in the post Why People Unsubscribe From Your List! Since them my numbers have been increasing slightly faster but it wasn’t because of that post.
