A Poem For Halloween The Night Of Frights

Halloween is all about kids dressing up like ghosts, witches, Frankenstein and anything else that may be related to scaring people and then going about the trick or treat routine. This is where kids would knock on doors begging for a treat and generally people would give them a sweet or something for their efforts. A lot of folk even decorate their homes for Halloween to give it a scary look.

Luckily for me the FlexSqueeze theme makes it really easy for me to give this blog that special Halloween feel, and when Halloween is all over I can switch back to my regular theme with a click of the mouse.

Keeping in line with the Halloween theme I thought I would post a poem about a scary night when you’re home alone. It may well fall on the night of Halloween itself, when all the trick or treating is done and it’s time to watch a spooky movie. I have to admit though that this time I just had to end the poem with a bit of a twist.

Home Alone On Halloween

Home alone on a dark windy night
Gonna watch horror movies to get a fright
Stick a movie in the DVD player
Got some chips and a dip for flavour

Turned the lights out and settled down
Sitting on the lounge in my night gown
The movie’s scary I’m crouching low
When’s the scary part coming, I don’t know

A screeching sound scares me out of my mind
I jump right up leaving my skin behind
Its only a moment before my skin comes back
Hitting my body with a blood curdling crack
I go into the kitchen for the carving knife
I need a weapon in case I meet some strife
I creep into the lounge, the movie still playing
When suddenly there’s some screeching baying

All of a sudden my heart’s in my throat
I can’t breathe I’m starting to choke
With some effort I push it down
I must find out what’s making that sound

I creep into the master bedroom
It’s dark and scary, will I meet my doom
A sound of water from the bathroom I hear
Is there a ghoulish fiend lurking near

The screeching starts, I can not bear it
I must stop it before my mind it splits
I raise the knife its blade a gleaming
I must stop that damn awful screaming

I open the door just a crack
To see the fiend I must attack
My jaw drops, eyes open wide in shock
My wife is back she beat the clock

That awful sound was her singing
That grating sound my ears a ringing
A horror movie that I had found
Would be much better if it used that sound.

  1. Sire, funny poem and good narrative skills. Reminds me of old school going days. Poem reciting, writing, memorizing competitions.. Glad I read it and perhaps I can share this with the family on Halloween. :D

  2. Isn’t that your copyright material…. LOL!
    It was indeed funny poem…

  3. LOL, that’s hilarious. I like your approach to poetry, Sire. I’m not much for poetry, because people think that just because they can put two words together that rhymes, suddenly they are a poet. However, it seems that when you set out to write a poem, you try to be a little bit original, and I like that. Now, if you can get James Earl Jones to read this, you’ll be set!

    1. OK, pardon my ignorance but who is James Earl Jones? Reckon I may have to Google it.

I’m glad you like the poem too Trey. It makes it all worth while.

      1. James Earl Jones was the voice of Darth Vader. He also does the “This Is CNN” voice over thing, but I’m not sure if you have CNN out where you live. If you’ve ever seen the Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons, he was the one who read the poem “The Raven”

        1. We do have CNN on Fox but I rarely watch it, as for the Simpsons, I remember that episode well, and yeah, if you could organize for him to read it for me it would be greatly appreciated. :laugh_tb:

  4. Thanks Mack, I’m glad you liked it. Halloween isn’t big here in Australia, but as a lot of my readers are Americans I just thought I would join in on the fun.

    1. That’s a great video Stefan. I reckon I will use that in my next post. Thanks mate.

  5. hahah.. Nice poem.. Halloween is my birthday! It’s always made for interesting remarks and parties over the years!

  6. Sire, you really have a way with words. I’m a fan of poetry and so far, this poem is one of my favorites for Halloween…and I love the red on black look of your site too! Great job, keep it up!

  8. Funny stuff Sire. Definitely wasn’t expecting the ending. Did you let your wife read it?

Hey I like the adjusting of your theme for this month’s holiday. Very cool. The red text is perfect too. Great job!

  9. Ah mate, that was hilarious! What did your wife make of the poem? Are you in the dog house now, or did she find it funny?

    1. Are you lidding Luke, my wife doesn’t read my blog :laugh_tb:

  10. Very nice poem. I’ve never heard a halloween poem before. Good Job.

  11. I loved the poem, especially the ending. So how has it been sleeping on the couch lately? My wife doesn’t appreciate my sense of humor (at her expense mainly) although I am only doing it for the laugh. I say toughen up, and laugh with us!

Maybe you could sneak a microphone on her, and add the audio to a future post and we can have a secret contest (who has the best/worst singing spouse) since I know how much you love to do contests.

I like the Halloween look of the website! You are always one step ahead of the rest of us.

    1. Yeah, even after 22 years of marriage my wife still doesn’t appreciate my sense of humor. I’m not sure sneaking the mike in would be a good idea. Not unless I can crash on your couch.

  12. Ok, the last two paragraphs crack me up big time. So much for all the horror (I’ve just done watching Final Destination 4, thank you) lol.. Good to have a twist there. Unexpectedly funny!

  13. The start of the poem is moving until the last couple of stanzas turned it around. It was really funny. Reminds me of my high school days back when I was literary editor for our school magazine. Good job on the twist!

    1. Thanks Mathdelane. When I first started to write the poem I had planned to end it with some sort of twist, and I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out.

      1. Kudos to you!

  14. That’s a great poem. Halloween does become very tedious, and relaxing on the sofa seems like the preferred way for a lot of people to spend the evening. But the kids sure do like it!

  15. I never imagine that reading a poem was really funny. You have a great sense of humor in creating a poem like this. I still can’t stop laughing while wring this comment because its just really funny for me.

    1. Thanks Martha, I’m glad it cracked you up.

  16. I reckon you would know more about that than me Geoff, as Halloween isn’t all that big in Australia. Still, from what I’ve seen in movies, even if you don’t go out, you still have to get up a whole lot to answer the door and hand out candy.

  17. Hello Sire. I don’t write poems, and most of time I have a hard time trying to understand them:) Yours did start scary (promising) but ended up as you said, with an unexpected “big” twist. Halloween is not very popular in my side of the world, but my kids do like the “trick or treat” part of it:) If you don’t mind, I am putting this up on my weekly echo, I know of people who will certainly enjoy reading this as well.

Nice job Sire. You should read your poem on video in a dark room lit by a candle and that horrible/screaming singing in the background. I’ll look for it on YouTube ;)
