This is very true, if it wasn’t so why are advertisers, unless you have a Blogger blog, willing to outlay so much money to have bloggers review their sites, products or services. It’s because they know that a lot of people listen to what many bloggers have to say.
They listen because bloggers are people, just like themselves, who have acquired a certain amount of knowledge through life and online experiences. This being the case I would like to ask you, my valued readers and supporters for your opinion as to why my site Cool Blog Links has only got 14 members since it’s conception over a year ago.
I know that I haven’t been promoting it at all, but seeing as how it gets a fair few hits from the various search engines I would have thought that some of those may have been persuaded to join. You would think that if you did a search for cool blog etc. and the link turns up on the first page that perhaps that alone would be incentive enough to join?
Cool Blog Links is a site for bloggers to list their blogs. It has many categories from Affiliate to SEO. If your category is not listed it can easily be added. All that’s required is that members paste a code on their blog which would display this image The top ten blogs have their ranking displayed on the trophy cup. The code is necessary because it allows the site to keep track of page views etc and also allows people to vote for their blog.
Anyway, for those interested, if you could maybe have a look at it and give me your honest opinion as to why you wouldn’t make use of this free service, one which provides another backlink to your blog from a PR2 site?

It really doesn’t get a lot of publicity, Sire. That, plus people probably can’t figure out how it benefits them. I have that same issue with my S&S site. I allow people to ask me to list their websites for free and I’d create categories for them if they didn’t already exist, and yet I haven’t had any new requests in a couple of years. You’d think the free link would be appreciated, but nope. So, there you go.

I know I don’t advertise it much, although I have done several posts on it, but it does get a fair bit of visits from the search engines, and I would have thought that some of those may have converted. I’m just surmising that there is something about the site that’s putting people off.
I talk about it all the time on my blog, Sire, my Services and Stuff site. See, you didn’t even remember that; probably why I get no takers for it.

Now that you mention it Mitch I do remember it, but not as a site that people could register their services and stuff. I thought it was something you used to promote your services and affiliates and such.
So do you have a category for blog directories?
I have a category for web directories, so yours would fit right in there. You should check out the main page to see what it looks like if you’ve never been there.

My guess is because it’s not turning up in searches for blog directories. If you don’t market it then no one is going to know it’s there.
Also some sites are just more successful than others. I have a blogging community that does ok traffic, but the forums are not that active compared to other blogging forums.
It has a directory to that use to be free until I started receiving loads of splog blogs and people removing the link back to be listed. Now I charge a $1.00 to be listed. More or less for my time.
Promote your site some and I’m sure bloggers will submit.
Rose, I admit I haven’t done all that much promotion, but I have mentioned in posts on more than one occasion so it’s not like those who read my blog don’t know about it.
So, my question is why are some of them not joining? Perhaps they don’t like the image I’m using or they’re just not into that sort of thing?

My opinion is that it looks outdated. It looks like a website that was built in the 90′s. Also, the filtering page at the beginning doesn’t might deter some people, because in this day and age, you have to grab peoples’ attention immediately.
If you tried a blog format, where you updated more frequently, that might help your google ranking.
I guess I don’t completely understand what the premise is behind this site, so I can’t give advice that is too detailed. Can you explain the site to me? Your goals and such?

Trey, what you’re seeing is the gateway page and normally you don’t see that unless you click on the image that is placed on the blog by it’s members.
Normally when clicking on the link it would take you to the site itself. Perhaps I can modify that page a little so as to explain to people what the site is about. Thanks mate.
No goals for the site. It’s sort of a blog directory so it’s basically there for people to advertise their blogs. Naturally if it ever took off and got a decent PR I was hopeful that there may have been some advertisers who would part with their money.
I have to agree with Trey. “Outdated” was an impression that was searching for a word (thanks, Trey); “busy” was the first word that came to mind. I back away fast from sites that have a lot of color clash and blinky stuff going on, and this one’s got it all.
But then, I also don’t use directories like this, especially directories that allow visitors to just add themselves. It’s like self-publishing: It may be a great site, but it would have more credibility if there was some editorial oversight. What’s the advantage here, to the visitor, over using a good search engine (except that in a sense, you’ve diluted my search engine results and given me yet-another-page-of-links when what I wanted was to find those sites fast).
To me, this screams “What’s behind door #2? Will it be a million dollars, or will it be a mud-covered pig? Or would you prefer door #3? Behind door #3, we’re pretty sure you’ll find a fairly ordinary site…”
Given how I feel about them, I don’t add my own sites to them. Now, knowing you’re behind this one (honestly, I didn’t know about the site at all until I read this post), I’d consider it…
Ultimately, though, I’ve chosen to tweet THIS post so you can get more feedback. I’m holding off for a bit on adding my site.

Thanks for your honesty Holly. I could get a site that didn’t have the banners but I thought that banners would be more of an incentive.
As I screen all sites you can be assured I do not allow anything that is unsavory. Apart from blogs that fall into the unsavory category, I accept all blogs great and small.
As to good search engines Holly, I’m sure any search will bring up just as much crap as good sites, not to mention a whole lot of unrelated with possibly a few porn sites thrown in for good measure.
Hi Sire, I was on there before the site crash and just never took the time to put it back on. The biggest complaint I get on my sites is they are too crowded and graphics heavy but that little image wouldn’t really be a factor.
I guess the fact the site gets search traffic is irrelevant to your members. It’s how much traffic they get from their banners. Truthfully I never paid much attention because it was on my personal blog and traffic is not my number one concern their. I do see ‘in’ and ‘out’ numbers but I’m not sure how to read it. It looks like the top position is only receiving 0.5 hits a week. That would only be two hits a month so I think I’m looking at it wrong. I should put my site back on there and pay more attention to the traffic it generates back to my site.

I’m not sure about the ins and outs of those particular stats Brian. I just look at the daily page views the other sites get to see how I rank against them.
I did just have a look at google analytics and it was rated #10 as far as referrals go, so that’s not all that bad. I would think that once the membership grew there would be an increase in traffic from the members themselves as they look to see what they’re up against.

I just thought of one other thing. Are those banners do-follow? If so that would be a great selling point.

I just had a look and it appears that they are dofollow. There were no nofollow tags that I could see.
I haven’t joined because I don’t have a banner. That and I didn’t want you to think I joined just for the link juice. Guess I have to feel it’s more sincere than that. I know, I think way too much sometimes.

2010 is the year that collaboration is going to become a must. I suggest all of us “not quite A listers” stick together & help push each other. The big guys won’t do anything for us because they are AFRAID! There is power in numbers & we just keep building up our “blog Army” to take over the top.

Actually Sheryl it is great. If there was a way that a group of blogs could get together helping each other out, spurring each other on and such and if you were to pull their combined reach together it would be a force to be reckoned with.

And many advertisers do not like to advertise in different high paying sites for banner links instead they would ask few bloggers like you,chingya….. to review about their product and in return get some nice hard cash :) :) :) :)

I think it is because directories like web site give less link juice from google (or even zero). At least that what my reasons to stop submit my blog to this kind of service.
