Don’t Piss Zak Off, You Won’t Like Him When He’s Mad

We used to have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and her name was Leisha. She was a beautiful dog with the best temperament and the family loved her. Unfortunately when she was about ten years old she developed cancer and we had to put her to sleep.

After Leisha I didn’t really want another dog, but once my daughter got over her grief she begged for another pet and so we acquired Zak. Zak was completely different from Leisha, where Leisha was a pure breed Zak was half Maltese and half Shitzu. Where Leisha was calm and love-able Zak had a bit of a temperament, but my daughter loved him all the same.

The thing with Zak was he was adorable when he as in a good mood, but your wouldn’t want to get him angry, because you just wouldn’t like him if you made him mad. You see if you piss Zak off he would turn from a love-able dog into Zak The K-9 Hulk!

Just kidding he’s adorable no matter what. He got this way by rolling around in the wet grass after I mowed the lawn. This was what he looked like after he saw his reflection in the mirror, before that he looked like this.

Securing Your WordPress Blog Against Hackers

A blogger’s worst fear is to have their WordPress blog hacked. This has happened to many bloggers and they will tell you of the painstaking steps involved in getting their blog back from the virtual dead, if that was at all possible. Some of the less technically inclined will give it up for lost and start again.

Today I came across a really good post titled How to Stop Your WordPress Blog Getting Hacked that outlines several steps of making your blog less ‘hackable’. I’ve already taken the steps of making my blog less noticeable to hackers by removing the footprints that would lead them to this blog. Very simple steps that I could easily go into more detail on how it can be done but I think you would be a lot better informed if you went directly to David’s post and read all about how you can secure your blog from hackers.

Wassupblog Update On Google Video Adsense Video Unit

I don’t know how many of you took notice of the videos I used to display on the sidebar, the fact that some people did was displayed by the increase in my monthly earnings. You see, I was trialing out Google’s Video Adsense unit which showed a different video every time the page was refreshed. I was just about to do a post on it to let everyone in on the action when I got an email from Google stating that they were pulling the ads as

we’ve found that it hasn’t been performing as well as we had hoped, so we’ve decided to focus our efforts on other opportunities to help publishers monetize their sites

Too bad, because I really liked those units, as they provided some unique content and an extra avenue for earning a bit of cash. The obvious choice to fill the gap was to provide another form of video content and I’ve decided to use The Voxant Newsroom which supplies the latest news around the globe. I selected the feed option as this is continually updated so I only need to place the code in once and then I could forget about it. The added bonus is that it will also contribute to my monthly income, not all that much but it all counts.

You can use the feed provided including US Feed, Local (US oddly enough), World, Business, Politics, Health, Sci-Tech, Entertainment etc. or structure your own feed. I’ve decided on the World Feed for now, but I may change it later.

The first thing I noticed, and wasn’t happy about was that the size of the video was either too big or too small.

That sort of pissed me off and I settled for the smaller version as the big version upset the whole look of the theme as it was completely outside the boundaries.

Then it hit me :doh_tb: :wallbash_tb: I’m using the FlexSqueeze theme, I should be able to change some values in the control panel and fix the problem. Two minutes later I was done, and I am now able to display the larger video without throwing things out. Being able to change the size of the sidebars and blogging content is a brilliant addition to any theme.

A Twitter Service You’d Be Crazy To Miss Out On

Remember my post on The 10 Stages Of A Twitterer where I basically, tongue in cheek, went through the different stages of life as a twitterer? Well thanks to Stratos of stratos.me I’ve installed a brand new WordPress plugin called Tweetscribe Me. I am so impressed with this plugin that I am actually going to make a small donation to the bloke who developed it as I think it is well deserved.

In a nutshell, what the plugin does is it allows you to get DM’d (that’s a Direct Message) via Twitter every time someone that you have subscribed to, via Tweetscribe Me, publishes a new post. Naturally they also get DM’d eveytime you publish a new post. Can you see the potential? I certainly did which is why I was the first one to test out this great plugin. Now let’s makes something quite clear. This dose not meant that you will get notified every time one of your Twitter followers published a post, heck that would drive me up the wall and I wouldn’t be pushing this plugin at all. Only those that you have subscribed to via Tweetscribe Me will be notified and you don’t even have to be following them on Twitter.

I know that you are probably thinking that this is the same as Tweet My Blog, but it isn’t as that plugin only sends out a general tweet to your followers, who if are not on line generally never get to see it. Tweetscribe Me will email them directly, DM them or both depending how you set it up. There is no way anyone can miss out on updates from any of the bloggers they have subscribed too. This is so much better than RSS readers as once again you have to physically run your RSS reader just to see what folks have been up to.

So, how do you get into the action? Man I am so glad you asked, because this Aussie blogger is just bustin at the seems to let everyone know how they can get instant tweeting gratification. Man, it’s almost better than sex. I did say almost. :laugh_tb: OK, Just follow the these steps in the order that I’ve presented them. This is very important.

You have to follow twscribe, because if you don’t it won’t work.
Download the Tweetscribe Me plugin and install it to your WordPress Blog.
Activate the plugin and then got to the plugin settings where you fill in your Twitter user name and password and click the save button.
Go to the Tweetscribe Me site and log in, once again with your Twitter details.

That’s all there is to it. Check out the enlisted blogs to find out who else is using the TweetScribe Me and subscribe to those you want to follow. You will be notified when someone subscribes to you and even when they unsubscribe. This is so much better than feedburner and the like because you can actually see who is following you. You can even display the amount of people following you by pasting a code into your sidebar. You can see mine on the right sidebar under the ‘Plug This Blog’ heading

At the moment members are few as this is brand spanking new, so we really need to get folks interested in it. So I am looking for you guys to join up as this is going to revolutionize the way we utilize Twitter. Tell everyone you know about it so that we can really get this going. The more members we have the greater selection of bloggers to choose from.

The Security Of Your Photos Is Important

I was reading Brian’s post on Zero To Three In 90 Days – Thanks Flickr!, but the thing that interested me wasn’t his miraculous PR jump from ‘Zero to Three’. Nope, the thing that interested me was the mention of the term watermark. Watermarks never used to bother me before because I hosted my photos on Photrade and they automatically placed a watermark on all my photos. The problem was that the site has been acting up and many of my photos were no longer showing up on my photo blogs. Naturally that was unacceptable.

I thought about going back to Flickr but I would only do that if I could protect my photos by placing a watermark them. I questioned Brian about that and he put me onto GIMP, he even graciously provided a video on how to use it to place a watermark on my photos. Thanks Brian, but I found that the whole procedure involved to much fart arsing around and I wanted something simpler.

I ended up buying WinWatermark which I found to be exceptional. I didn’t even bother with the free trial version. It also had the extra benefit of saving the photo at a lower resolution of choice which I reckon is great. That way if someone wanted to buy the high quality version they would have to ask me for it.
The photo below shows the watermark at the bottom of the photo. Notice the web address at the bottom. That way if someone uses the photo on a blog or website or something, and forgets to link to it the address is still displayed on the photo itself. Got that idea from Brian.

Another tip I got from Brian was entering the following into the description of each photo.

You may use this photo for your website or blog as long as the watermark remains visible. You are also required to link to Wassup Blog with due photo credit.

The software allows me to past it anywhere on the photo. I can even tile and rotate it so that I get the following effect.

Notice how I even changed the color of the watermark. Everything is so easy with this program. I can put the watermark on a single photo or I can place it on every photo in any folder.
